There is a monument in memory of Charles for leading the first battle of the American Revolution at Tu Eudie Wie State Park in Point Pleasant, WV. Ann Bailey, Chief Cornstalk and other heroes of the battle are buried at this park. Andrew fought in the French and Indian War. He was taken prisoner by the French for 13 months. Andrew was a Colonel in Dunmore's War along with his brother, Charles. Andrew and his 600 men defeated' Chief Cornstalk and his Shawnee Warriors in the Battle of Point Pleasant• He was Brigadier General in the American Revolutionary War. When his military career was finished, he served on the Governor Council under both Governor Thomas Jefferson and Governor Thomas Nelson. Andrew died September 26, 1781 at his home in Bedford County, Virginia. He is buried at East Hill Cemetery, Salem, VA. His tombstone reads: "GENERAL ANDREW LEWIS 1716 -1781 PIONEER PATRIOT HERO OF THE BATTLE OF POINT PLEAsANT WHICH WAS THE MOST CLOSELY CONTESTED OF ANY BATTLE EVER FOUGHT WITH THE NORTHWESTERN INDIANS; WAS THE OPENING ACT IN THE DRAME WHEREOF THE ' CLOSING SCENE WAs PLAYED AT YOURKTOWN." John Lewis and Margaret Lynn Lewis. Andrew was born in County Donegal, Ireland on October 9, 1720. Charles was born in Augusta County, Virginia in March 11, 1736. Their father, Col. John Lewis killed his landlord in 1732 in an altercation. He fled to Virginia with his wife and two of his sons, Andrew and Thomas. They settled in western Augusta County, Virginia. Andrew became a surveyor. He surveyed some of what is now Greenbrier. County, WV and Cowpasture River Valleys. He married Elizabeth Givens, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Givens, formerly from County Antrim, Ireland. They had seven children: Samuel (c.1748-1763), John (1750-1788), Thomas (1752- 1800), Andrew Jr. (1759-1844), Anne (1760), William (1764-1812), and Charles (c.1768-1781). They settled in Roanoke County near Salem. Charles was a prominent Virginia planter and a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses.
