grass clippings at least two
inches deep. This excludes light
from the soft surface to pre-
vent weed germination. Loose
material such as hay or straw
must be at least six inches deep
to produce similar results.
Organic mulching materials
act as an insulting blanker,
keeping the ground cooler for a
longer period of time in the
spring and warmer through the
fall months. Therefore, it is
important not to apply the mat-
erial too early in the spring if
warm soft crops are grown.
Organic mulches improve the
soil structure when the mat-
erial is tilled into the soil and
decays. However, the decay
process uses soil nitrogen which
can lead to a nitrogen defic-
iency in plants. This is over-
come by using one-half pound of
10-10-10 or 10-6-4 or one pound of
5-10-5 or 5-10-10 fertilizer per 100
square feet.
One drawback of organic mul-
ches is usually an increase in
slugs, which hide under the
cool, moist mulch during the
day and come out to feed at
night or during overcast days.
Black plastic film, the most
widely used inorganic mulch,
must be in place before the plot
is planted. Hold in place by
burying the edges in shallow
trenches. Before the plastic is
put down, be sure the ground is
moist and level.
This mulch is relatively in-
expensive and easy to apply. It
also provides good-weed con-
trol and moisture conservation.
The soft gets warmer under
black plastic than in an un-
mulched area. This is an ad-
vantage to crops that prefer
warm soil ( tomatoes, cucum-
bers, squash, strawberries, etc.
).
The use of clear plastic film
results in higher soil temper-
atures than black plastic film,
but it will not control weeds.
When black plastic is uded
with shallow-rooted ornamental
plantins that are intolerant to
high soil temperatures, it can be
covered with crushed stone,
wood chips, bark chips or other
materials that will prevent the
rays of the sun from striking the
plastic film.
Black plastic film also keeps
vegetables cleaner by prevent-
ing soil from being splashed
around during rainstorms. The
