tt
The explosion of an ice cream
truck in New York City last
year which injured 160 persons
and shattered nearby office
windows was caused by a can of
gasoline stored in the vehicle's
cab.
Houses have been lifted off
foundations and set afire by a
basement full of gasoline fumes
ignited by a furnace or water
heater pilot light.
Garages and workshops have
been scenes of deafening ex-
plosions when gasoline was be -
ing used as a grease clean-
ing solvent on lawnmowers or
car engine parts.
Worst of all are the reports of
persons being trapped in autos
engulfed in flames from extra
gasoline containers ignited by a
crash.
It's a fact that professional
racing drivers are more fear-
ful of the fire after a crash than
the crash itself•
One account of a crash dur-
ing an auto race described a
driver who, though he had been
knocked unconscious and would
remain so for three days, was
trying to crawl out of his smash-
ed racer when rescue workers
reached him. His instinctive
fear of fire was that strong.
What might look like a con-
venient way to beat a gasoline
shortage on the road or in the
home can have tragic side
effects if _precautions are not
taken. Here are a few tips:
