Understanding Your Body
FACTS TO HELP YOU HELP YOURSELF
Eating hurriedly can cause
you to swallow a substantial
.amount of air along with the
food. According to gastroen-
terologists- doctors who spe-
cialize in the digestive sys-
tem-this swallowed air ac-
counts for about 80 percent of
gas trapped in the digestive
tract.
Modern day foods also con-
tribute to the problem• Carbo-
nated beverages like soda and
beer quench the thirst but add
thou•and• of gas bubble• to the
digestive system. "Sugar-free"
items containing the artificial
sweetener serbitot can produce
gas and bloating. One sugar-
free mint is almost 100 percent
sorbitol. A stick of sugar-free
chewing gum may be as much
as 80 percent sorbitol.
Some popular diet• are well-
known gas producers. High-
fiber diets rich in cereals, fruits
and vegetables may produce
gas when consumed in excess.
A sudden change from a low-
-arbohydrate diet to a high-car-
bohydrate diet may also result
in excessive gas.
• Flying can be a •ourco of gas-
trointestinal discomfort. Writ-
ing for the International Medi-
cal Tribune Syndicate, Dr. Karl
Neumann explain• that dis-
comfort on long flight• may be
due to "a normal expansion of
gases in the intestinal tract re-
suiting from decreased atmos-
pheric pressure."
Anything that contributes to
• wallowing air can result in gas
accumulation. Nervous tension
shares the blame. So do habits
that increase salivation, such
as gum chewing and smoking.
To minimize discomfort from
gas, many physician• recom-
mend an over-the-counter anti-
gas preparation called
Phazyme, which contain•
simethicone. Simethicone
breaks up the frothy mass in
the stomach and intestines that
causes gas pain. Experts at
Reed & Carnrick, manufactur-
ers of Phazyme, offer the fol-
lowing dos and don'ts to help
prevent gas pain.
• DO set aside sufficient
time to sit down and properly
enjoy your meal•. Chew food
thoroughly before •wallowing.
• DO select and prepare
food with an eye to what is eas-
ily digestible.
• DON't chew gum or suck
hard candy or smoke. These
habit• contribute to •wallowing
air.
• DONq" overindulge in
carbonated beverages.
a DO, if severe gastrointes-
tinal pain• persist, see a
physician
