6- mnton News Tues. May 20, 2003 Summers Middle School Track Lands A Second Place for Boys and Girls " Teams w' ,." Summers County Middle School a time of 44 96 beat meet record of Track Meet held on May lst., at 45 4 held by'Summers County Boys ' Southern West Virginia Invitational in 2000 * Meet. " ,% Girls Shuttle Hurdle Relay with t ,# # "i ! ", First let me say that I welcome Chief Tim Adkins' opinion and commentary to the fray. In my view it is long overdue. Without dialog about problems there will be no solutions. Chief Adkins attempts to place himself on the high road by saying he is talking factual truth and not crystal ball fiction. He seemingly advances the notion that everything he says is truth while on the other hand other opinions are hearsay. But his first commentary begins with a factual distortions. He says, obviously referring to me, "But it seems maybe you and other individuals feel the most important duty of the Hinton Police officers is to enforce parking violations in the downtown area." Fact: I have never said nor do I think that this is the most important thing the police should do. What I said was that the law is not being enforced equally. My opinion is not founded on fiction, but is based in part on the parking ticket I received in front of the Hinton News office. George Orwell in his book Animal Farm writes that some pig's are more equal then other pigs. I do not think I was actually violating the law- but I received the ticket as the less equal pig while a real violation received no ticket at all. This is born out by a "factual photo of a blatant violation much more serious occurring about 200 feet away that did not receive a ticket at the same time my ticket was issued. This is hardly ChiefAdkins stated model in his commentary when he says "...but if you don't issue tickets for all violations then don't issue any at all? My opinion is I received the ticket because of some' political motive to intimidate, This factual, photographed event is not the same as the Chiefs supposedly "factual" assertion in his commentary. I ask who picks and chooses who receives a ticket? Also why does a non-violation receive a ticket while a violation gets off"scott-free" at the same time? Officer Jackie Adkins could have parked his crnieer on the sidewalk I was allegedly blocking between my parked vehicle and the building. Incidentally there are no "no- parking" signs. Perhaps the Chief will explain this for us in another commentary. While the Chief is saying he is writing "Facts?" perhaps he will let the readers know how many parking tickets were issued in the City of Hinton from December 2002 through April 2003. Then the Chief can tell the readers how many of those were issued at the Hinton News office. Like Michael Jordan says "Do it!" The readers have a right to know. I will give him the opportunity to come clean otherwise, I will print it next month. I believe the real Facts will bear out that this is an irregularity and it raises serious questions with respect to equal enforcement of law. As the Chief says "stay tuned! I agree with the Chiefs paradigm. "If you don't issue tickets for all violations don't issue any ticket at all. However if the Chief's premise were logical then multiple tickets would have been issued for any violations instead of singling me out that day. If he is man enough to reveal the above 5-month summary of issued tickets the readers will be able to decide themselves if the police force practices what the Chief preaches. Tim makes the point that the Police Department never intended to become involved in politics. He says they were "drug" into it. Who did this? Was it this newspaper? Or was it because the City Council ignored citizen complaint about many issues. I submit that the defenders of the police who chose to issue death threats, send hate mail, harass and smear those who questioned operations of the police were the ones who politicized this issue and dragged the police into this political fray. I wonder whom it was who dragged Tim on TV to make political statements regarding the Mayor's lack of authority vis-a-vis the Rex Cyphers' hiring? Tim appeared willing enough on camera. He proposed that the Mayor lacked police management authority then, I quote the Chief's commentary again, "...it is the responsibility of the mayor to provide 24 hour police protection." Now he recognizes the mayor's authority at this point with respect to policing when he blames her for the problems. Proper respect of the policing mayoral authority back then by the rank and file may have staved off this community fracture. The most disturbing notion of his commentary is the premise that speaking ones mind about issues should not occur because it damages the community's image. This is ignoring and sanctioning problems. It is like the old saying "looking at life through rose colored glasses7 If I were contemplating moving here I would want to know the TRUTH about Hinton. I would not want the sales approach to be like buying a used car from an unscrupulous salesman. So while we are dealing in "facts" let us not pretend this is Disney World and that our history is squeaky clean. The way to deal with a problem is to first-identify it and face up to it. Form a plan to correct it. Implement the plan. Then check back in to make sure that the correction is working. This is called progress. It takes a person of good judgement to do this. My opinio4s Hinton needs change and that the leopard may indeed have to change its spots to make improvement. Tim you shouldn't take everything so personally. You were not really the leopard except in your own mind. The leopard was the figurative problem concerning police protocols.
