Hinton Designated a
Tree City USA
Robert Hannah, (right), Division of Forestry announced the
naming of Hinton as a Tree City USA last week and presented a
flag denoting the honor to the Mayor and Tree Board.
For the third consecutive year,
Hinton, W. Va. has received national
recognition as being designated a
Tree City USAby the National Arbor
Day Foundation.
This announcement was made
Tuesday, April 14th., at an Arbor
Day Celebration held on Temple
Street in front of the gymnasium.
To become a Tree City USA, a
community must meet four
standards: a tree board or
department, a tree care ordinance,
a comprehensive community
forestry program and an Arbor Day
observance.
Tree City USA designation
recognizes the work of elected
officials, staff and citizens who plant
and care for the community forest.
Arbor Day president, John Rosenow
Basham, Donna Pivont, Mary
Frances Talbert. Also recognized
was Jerry Wheeler, Robert Rodes,
principal of the Middle School and
Greenbrier Nurseries.
Special music for the occasion was
provided by the Middle School Band
under the direction of Becky Green.
Opening prayer was offered by Rev.
Warren Gilpin, pastor of the First
Baptist Church.
Mr. Robert Hannah of Fairmont,
Division of Forestry, spoke giving a
brief history of Arbor Day which was
begun by J. Sterling Norton, a
pioneer in Nebraska.
Mayor Cleo Mathews read the
official Arbor Day proclamation. Mr.
Hannah announced the name of
Hinton as a Tree City USA after

2003 YOUTH CAMP
FUND DRIVE
May 19 marked the opening of
Loaves and Fishes Fund Drive for
its 2003 Youth Camp. This year's
camp, which serves low-income
youth from Summers County, will be
held at Camp Summers (4-H Camp)
from June 23-27. In helping to kick
off the campaign, with its goal of
$4,000, Loaves and Fishes
coordinator, Jane Duffield
explained, "This year's camp
expenses will be about $6,000. The
WV Department of Education's
Summer Food Program will help but
the majority of our funds have to be
raised locally. So to make the camp
happen once again in 2003, we're
asking the people of Summers
County for their help."
The camp's primary purpose is to
assure that local children, ages 6-10,
will have a week-long experience at
Camp Summers. Activities include
crafts, sports, nature study and
swimming. With the exception of
the lifeguard and cook, the camp is
staffed entirely by local volunteers.
2003 marks the sixteenth year
that Loaves and Fishes has
• sponsored the camp. Contributions
to this year's camp may be mailed
to Loaves and Fishes, P. O. Box 56,
Hinton, WV 25951 or dropped off
at the 127 Ballengee St. storefront (
M, W, F 10 AM-2 PM). All donations
are tax-deductible.

CARD OF THANKS
Our Family Herb
Sam & Anna, Rick & Alicla Free & Family respectfully extend a
heartfelt thank you to Charlie Merrlam for his heroic first aid
response, performing the heimlich maneuver to help dislodge a
piece of meat lodged In our mothers' (Norma Free) throat during
our Mothers Day celebration. Charlle's safety training from his
many years as a volunteer fireman took over in a matter of seconds
when he was told that his wife Julle's grandmother was in serious
trouble breathing and was choking on a piece of meat. Charlle
Immediately began to perform the heimllch maneuver and after
several attempts was able to help dislodge the obstruction. Charlle
is definitely a hero in our families eyes and we are proud to have
him in our family as our son (son-in-law).

(John 8:32)
By Fred Seavers Hearings as well as "Tongues," we
Bible miraclea do not take place today, always for a sign -- 1 Connthians 14:2,]
no matter what some claim. "Wherefore, tongues are for a sign ..
Today we will examine the first of two
arguments used by those who believe in the
existence today, of, as it is commonly called,
"The gifts of the Spirit (miracles)." The
argument is as follows: 1. "You cannot ask
me to show you a miracle, that is seeking
after a sign, and tempting GOd."
Argument #1 examined: First century
Christians were commanded to "Try" or
"Test" the speaker. They had the right to
know if what was being taught was from GOd
or man; this is why miracles were used to
"confirm" the word being spoken -- Mark
16:20, ; Matthew 10:7-8, Hebrews 2:1-4; 1
John 4:1; Revelation 2:2 with 2 Corinthians
12:12.
When the Jews asked to see a sign from
Jesus, as found in Matthew 12:39-41, He
gave them the miraculous sign of His
resurrection from the grave. HE GAVE
THEM A SIGN! Jesus performed many
"signs," John 20:24-31. Jesus and the
apostles did not heal people out of the sole
purpose of love and compassion.
Epaphroditus remained sick for a long time,
and Trophimus was left at Miletum sick --
Philippians 2:25-30; 2 Timothy 4:20. The
same was true of Lazarus. He was allowed
to die so Jesus could show His power over
nature, and to cause them to believe, John
11:15, 40-43.
Apparently then, since many give publJ
