Give Us Some
Real Facts
Dear Editor:
I read the article written by Tim
Adkins in your paper last week and
unfortunately it was lengthy but as
the commercial used to say "where's
the beef?."
I would have liked to know, or
hear, about realistic statistics on the
time his officers spent in calls for
service, arrests, court, etc. I dare to
say it probably is very limited.
Instead of gripping about the
parking situation in town why didn't
he make some constructive
contribution to that committee? The
Mayor may or may not be
experienced enough to handle the
problems of his Department, but
what is the attrition rate and
average retention rate of his
Department and he as the Chief
should have foreseen these problems
before they became traumatic.
In addition, he should ask himself
why these Officers decline to work
under his command any longer:
J

This is just one instance of a
woman discovering late in
pregnancy that she is to give birth
to a fetus that has no chance of living
or has no chance of living except in
a severely handicapped way. Is it
fair for people based on their faith--
that is, based on an implausible
hypothesis irrational held-- to
pressure lawmakers to make
criminals of women and doctors who
decide to abort such a pregnancy?
Or to call women who have
abortions in such cases murderers?
Or in any case for that matter?
Sincerely,
Perry E. Mann

Continuing a story written by H.
P. Henshaw, a high ranking official
of the C&O that first appeared in
The West Virginia Review and was
reprinted in Hinton Daily News
June 7, 1937 that is of interest to
our readers.
"The following is a description
and location of the coal regions in
West Virginia served by the
Chesapeake & Ohio. It is taken from
an article written by W. C. Hull,
assistant Vice President, Traffic
Chesapeake & Ohio, Cleveland,
Ohio.
"BRANCH LINES"
"New River-Winding Gulf." This
article derives its name from the fact
that is it traversed by New River and
its tributaries. It extends along the
main line of the Chesapeake & Ohio
Railway from Hinten on the east, to
Gauley on the west, and the north
and south branch lines intersecting
the main line between these "two
points, and lies in Greenbrier,
Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas, and
Summers counties. The branch lines
in the order of their importance from
a tonnage standpoint are: Piney,
Loup Creek, Sewell Valley Sub-
division, Laurel Creek, Keeneys
Creek, Gauley and Hawks News.
This coal is technically known as low
volatile, but more commonly called
smokesless, because of the law
content of smoke producing
elements. The lowest volatile surface
area developed in the New River-
Winding Gulf District, comprises
1,390 square miles. Underlying the
district are twenty seams of
commercial value varying in
thickness from three to eight feet.
The principle seams are Sewell, Fire
Creek, and Beckley. The first
development in this field was
through the Gauley - Kanawha Coal
Company, an English corporation
having control of some 2,000 acres
of land now served by our Gauley
Branch. At that time no one knew of
any workable beds along New River.
.... "KANAWHA BRANCH"
' '2mawha. $6 naned'behis 'as
Originally developed it was along the
Kanawha River. It was from this
district that the first coal from our
territory was shipped. History
records that it was also the first
district in America to actually
produce coal, it being discovered
there in 1742, and a record of mining
existing as early as 1817 for local
use. Operation on a broader
commercial scale began in 1865.

Dear Editor:
If one reads "The Jungle" by
Upton Sinclair, in which the
slaughter and packing of animals for
supermarkets is described in detail,
he has an inclination to become a
vegetarian. And certainly when one
reads the clinical details of so-called
partial-birth abortion, one is deeply
disturbed by the description. But
people continue to eat meat and to
have abortions.
In spite of the shocking procedure
of abortion of any kind, there are
situations where few, even anti-
abortionists, would choose not to
abort. The following is such a
situation described by Melissa F.
Stoeltje in San Antonio Express-
News.
"As usual, the inflammatory
rhetoric and outright deception by
the anti-choice forces has drowned
out the voices of real women. Meet
Maureen Britell. In 1994, she was
five months pregnant with her
second child when a sonogram
revealed her fetus suffered with
anencephaly-- a congenital
anomaly in which no brain develops.
Her future daughter had no chance
of living outside the womb.
'We were hysterical,' recalls
Britell, an Irish Catholic whose
husband was a fighter pilot. She
talked to her priest and her doctor,
and it was decided the best course
was an induction abortion. The fetus
became lodged during delivery and
her doctor had to reach in and cut
the cord an act that would
imprison him under the new ban.
(The senate has recently passed a
bill outlawing D & X or partial-birth
abortions.]
"At this point, abortion foes would
no doubt ask: Why not carry the
doomed pregnancy, to term? Why
abort? Because she couldn't
emotionally withstand the questions
about her due date, couldn't abide
telling strangers she was in the
market for a coffin, not a crib.
"rhis is a tremendous-loss any
way you look at it,' says Britell, who
later went on to have a healthy son.

Creek Branch, with a yearly
production in 1926 of 2,680,000 tons,
and carried up to that date as
Kanawha District mines were
transferred to the Coal River
District. The tonnage from this
group of mines, after a physical
connection was made available
between Whitesville, West Virginia
and Seth, West Virginia, moved over

Main line at St. Albans instead of
over the Kanawha District to Cabin
Creek Junction, thereby overcoming
adverse grades and effecting more
rapid movement. The maximum
yearly production of Kanawha
District, prior to the transfer of these
nineteen mines to the Coal River
District, was in 1925 when a total of
7,845,515 tons of coal were
produced.
"COAL RIVER"
"As its name implies, it is a
tributary to Coal River and is
another one of our high-volatile
fields. It is located in Boone, Raleigh,
Lincoln, and Logan counties in West
Virginia. its branch lines in the
order of their tonnage importance
are: Big Coal, Pond Fork, Beech
Fork, Horse Creek, and Ivy Creek,
although approximately one-
seventh of the production comes
from mines along the main line. It
is served by the Coal River Branch
of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway
which extends from St. Albans, West
Virginia to Sovereign and
Whitesville, West Virginia, a
distance of ninety-five miles. Its
surface area of developed coal lands
embraces 540 square miles, and its
undeveloped, 227 square miles,
making a total of 767 square miles.
The first mine shipping coal from
this district was the Reynolds mine
of the Black Band Consolidated Coal
Company, in 1905. The district
loaded 7,211,000 tons in 1928.
"Logan: This district takes its
name from the principal town in the
territory, i.e. Logan, West Virignia.
It is the largest producing district

one;gte'tal cd.
It includes the continues of Logan
and Lincoln in West Virginia. While
one-seventy of the production of this
district is from the main line, the
principal tonnage comes from the
in the order of their tonnage
importance: Island Creek, Logan
and Southern, Buffalo Extention,
Rum Creek, Dingess Run, Huff
Creek, and Elk Creek. The first
mine, the Gay mine, started
shipping coal in 1904.
"As the Chesapeake and She has
surpassed any dream Washington
might have had for a transportation
system to the Ohio River, so has coal
as a commodity of commerce reached
almost unbelievable proportions. Yet
coal, as we know it, dates back to
about the time of Alexander the
Great. One of Aristole's pupils
mentions in his writings, the use by
Smiths of black stones that kindled
and burned like "charcoals," and coal
ashes have been found in ruins of
ancient cities.
Sleep like a' kitten and Arrive
Fresh as a Daisy," is a slogan used
by the Chesapeake and Ohio in
advertising its passenger train
service, but the one of"Coal from the
Coal Bin of America," tells the story
of the road's progress in more
popular terms to West Virginia."

Marijuana Still
Most Widely
Used Drug
According to the latest
information from NIDA (National
Institute on DrugAbuse) marijuana
is the most widely used illicit drug
among America's youth. The
statistics show that some of the
drugs being abused more frequently
are those that are falsely believed
to be 'safe'. We are facing a
tremendous knowledge gap about
the very real dangers of drugs, like
Ecstasy and marijuana.
The use of marijuana can produce
adverse physical, mental, emotional,
and behavioral changes, and,
contrary to popular belief, it can be
addictive. Ecstasy has been proven
to cause brain damage and both
drugs damage the levels of
serotonin, d, 0pamine and endorp

Drug Approved for
Treating Intestinal
Infections In Children '
Giardiasis is a medical term that
refers to a specific infection of the
gastrointestinal tract caused by the
bacteria Giardia lamblia. Accord-
ing to the medical literature this in,

of the most common parasitic infec,
tions in the United States. It is espe-

faction is commonly found in areas
where there is poor sanitation and
where there is exposure to contami-

seems to prefer the intestine is called
Cryptosporidium. It can cause se-
vere illness and even death in people
with weakened immune systems. '
A new drug was recently ap-
proved by the US Food and Drug
Administration to treat diarrhea
caused by both Cryptosporidium'
and Giardia. It is approved for use
in children between the ages of 12
months and 11 years. The new drug
