Strawberry Festival
On Saturday, May 28 the town of
Alderson will hold their first annual
Strawberry Festival with Sunset
Berry Farm & Produce (and friends)
leading the charge. The Alderson
Strawberry Festival, Garden Sale &
Flea Market is a major fundraising
event for local nonprofit. The
schedule below will give an idea of
just some of what is happening
during the day.

Activities for the kids will be all
day, including face painting. The Big
Wheel Restaurant will have specials
on strawberry milkshakes and
sundaes. Look for discounted
strawberry items at the Green
Grocer and the Exxon Station. The
shops of Alderson will be open with
wonderful spring items. The
Alderson Thrift Shop has some great
items and is a fundraiser for the
Alderson Ministerial Association.
The Flea Market is open to nonprofit
for fundraising. The Girl Scouts will
have a Dunking Booth (dunk your
favorite presidential candidate!);
Alderson Main Street will sell
Strawberry Iced Tea & Lemonade
next to Alumni Park; the Johnson
Reduce you risk of tick-borne
disease this spring and summer by
following these tips:

commonly found from April -
September in grassy, brushy, and/or
wooded areas with shade.

Camp Brookside Environmental
Education Center Opens at New
River Gorge National River
Public Invited to Grand Opening
Ceremony on May 21st
New River Gorge National River
and Friends of New River Gorge
National River will host a grand
opening celebration of the new
Camp Brookside Environmental
Education Center (EEC) in Brooks,
West Virginia, on Saturday, May
21, 2016. The event is free and open
to the public. The ceremony begins
at 2:00 pm, but the center grounds
will be open 1:00 - 3:00 pm.
Visitors are invited to tour the
grounds to check out the newly
renovated cabins, mess hall, wash
serve as an overnight facility and
environmental education center
for the park and surrounding
communities. Camp Brookside E]~
can house up to 38 overnight guests
with seven cabins, including a fully
accessible one with its own shower,
a wash house with showers, and a
large mess hall with a commercial
kitchen.

to becoming a premier destination
for research, citizen science,
and environmental education to
create the next generation of park
supporters and advocates for public
lands.
To help operate the center, and
to provide other support to the NPS,

Built on a 32 acre island in
the New River, Camp Brookside
originally opened in 1947 as a
children's summer camp for the
employees of Union Carbide in
Alloy, WV.
For years, campers enjoyed
activities such as swimming, sports,
and arts and crafts. During the
1960s, the plant opened the camp to
family vacations and reunions. The
site was purchased by the National
Park Service (NPS) in 1993 and
has been recently renovated to

A variety of FREE events will
be offered at Camp Brookside EEC
during its inaugural summer. The
NPS has partnered with Active
Southern West Virginia to offer
a series of outdoor education
and recreation classes such as
yoga, stand up paddleboarding,
bird walls, and night hikes. A

COMMUNITY SUPPORT
The Hinton Lions Club is asking
for the Communities support in
helping to provide those who need,
eye examinations or eye glasses.
The Hinton Lions have been
providing assistance for over 18
years and are asking community
organizations and businesses as well
as citizens for monetary donations
to continue providing help to those
in need in our community. As news
spreads of the help being provided,
requests are now outnumbering the
Lions Club's ability to help.
Once a request is received, the
individual's application is screened
to insure that other avenues of.
assistance are pursued before the
Lions Club provides help.
