Pivont Funeral Home 100 Park Ave., Hinton 466-0026 Apr. 18 - 24th was National Library Week. Here in the Summers County Public Library we celebrated by having our annual Read Your Way to the Governor's Office essay contest for 7th, 8th and 9th graders. Students in these classes were asked to write a one page essay on how reading can help you achieve your goals. Approximately 300 essays were turned in to the judges. From these the best essay for the 7th, the best for the 8th and the best for the 9th grades were picked. These students each received a certificate and $25 from the Friends of the Library. The best overall essay was picked from these three winners and the author of the winning essay was invited to lunch with Gaston Caperton on Apr. 29th. And the winners are! 7th grade Dave Cales, 9th grade Todd Honaker, 8th grade and overall winner Amy Bragg whose outstanding essay appears below. My Library Card - I read my way there My name is Bronte Alexandra, and I live in a small dwelling on the outskirts of Hinton, W.Va. The story I am about to tell you is how I achieved my goals through reading as a child. When I was a child, my parent's urged me to be far ahead of my fellow kindergartens. When I first started school, I knew the usual of alphabet and numbers to ten. I needed more. I desired a better grasp of knowledge. One day, shortly after school had begun, I was talking to my mother, she told me that I needed a library card. Wow! A real card with my name on it! This card is only the beginning. Everyday since then I have ventured to the library and have taken out my old, worn and tired looking library Card which still brings a sparkle to my eye. Now, I am a successful lawyer. I owe a lot to my morn buteven more to my library. Without the wonders era library card, I may never have discovered the miracles of books, Amy Bragg, 8th HHS Barbara Parmer. Congratulations are due Amy and special and heartfelt thanks to Tom Hutchison, Dabble Cantrel], Lena Jane Jones and Barbara Parmer for making room in their overcrowded lesson plans so that their students could write essays. Thanks also to our judges Thelma Garten and Hazel Davidson along with librarian Myra Ziegler who read 'ti] their eyes were red and'agonized over which one of all the many wonderful entries diserved a prize. . jj Kansas leads all the states in wheat production and the pro- duction of civilian airplanes.
