LIFE AND CAREER OF
JOSEPH LAWTON BEURY:
The first freight station to open
for businessin the New River Gorge
was at Quinnimont, <Latin for five
mountains,> twenty-two miles west
ofHinton, W.Va. Because it was the
first station, many firsts were to
follow. Before the Chesapeake and
Ohio Railway opened for business
west of Hin ton, Joseph Lawton Be ury
was busy at Quinnimont preparing
his mine holdings for the historic
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Setting The Record
Straight
• Dear Editor:
Rumors are going around in Hin-
ton that my mother; Mrs. Margaret
Briggs has alaw suit pending against
my father; Mr. Carl E. Carter for
back child support, which is an out
right lie.
My mother said it doesn't matter
what people say, but it matters to me
because she is my mother.
For the record she raised six kids
by herself and she did a very, very
good job.
If this rumor were true, she
would be well within her rights.
These people know who they are
and for you I say this, "mind your
own business, for years you have
continued to spread lies about nu-
merous people, decent people, I
would think at some point and time
you would grow up and join the real
world but I see that will never hap-
pen." There is no excuse for igno-
rance of this kind, my mother de-
serves more respect than this and I
as her daughter demand it.
Have things gotten so bad in
Hinton that you really have nothing
else to do?
A family is suppose to be a
symbol of unity whether it's uncle's,
aunt's, cousins or whatever.
My'mother is hum]be;; #l, always
have been and always will be, can
you say the same?
Being mother and father is a hard
thing to experience, but when your
kids are grown and make a life for
themselves and become the respon-
sible adults thatyou strived for them
to be you can look back and see that
all the struggles you endured were
well worth it.
My mother can do that and what'
more she can hold her hea up higl-.
and no-one has the right to say oth-
event, the arrival of the iron horse.
The first load of coal to move over the
C&O was shipped from his mine in
Sept. 1873.
Foundries and blast furnaces in
Vs. were in great demand for coke.
Being the enterprising man that he
was, he was happy to manufacture it
for them. In 1874 Editor of the
Richmond Whig paid a fitting com-
pliment to the coke from W.Va.,
notably Quinnimont, when he said:
=In the office of Tredegar Company
we have seen a specimen of coke
made from a coal deposit on the line
of the C&Oin the New River district.
It is equal to the best English coke
exported from England . . . , as its
experimental use in the Tredegar
Works has demonstrated. This coke
s destined to supersede the Penn-
sylvania Anthracite .... "
Joseph L. Beury was born in
Schuylkill County, Pa., Aug. 15,
1842. He enlisted in the Union Army
as a Private before completing his
common school education. He was
soon promoted to Captain and the
title Colonel conferred on him by the
Governor after he came to W.Va.
He was married in 1869 to Julia
A Foulds of Trevorton, Pa., and
because of trouble with a secret
organization of terrorists, the Molly
McGuires, he moved to Fayette Co.,
W.Va., in 1872 and located at the
mouth of Laurel Creek, a wilderness
known as Quinnimont. After becom-
ing wll established at Quinnimont
he became the first member and
manager of the first coal company
organized in the Fayette County coal
fields, known as the New River Coal
Company.
In 1876 he associated himselfwith
Jenkin Jones and John Freeman and
developed the mines at Fire Creek, a
very lucrative adventure for many
years. From Fire Creek he expanded
to Hawk's Nest. This mine soon
pinched out with very little profit
made, however, his other holdings
eventtl.lgnmdo him one of the
welthest coal operators in the state.
He leased and operated the Gauley
Mountain Coal Company's Ansted
mine for six months. This was a very
successful venture but unfortunately
the lease had a stipulation the own-
ere could terminate the lease after
six months and they did just that.
Following the Ansted adventure
he associated with pardners John
Cooper and his brother, William
Beury, and opened the huge Echo
mine. Later, with Messers D.A. and
W.T. Thayer, he became associated
with the mines at Beury, Buffalo
Creek, Little Fire Creek, Thayer and
Hope coal companies, the Ports Val-
ley Mining & Manufacturing Com-
pany and the Dunlap Creek Iron Ore
Company. He was also a stockholder
in the Beechwood and Turkey Knob
Coal & Coke Companies.
Col. Beury died at his home at
Beury, two miles west of Thurmond,
June 2, 1903. The Editor of Hinton
Daily News and Leader on June 3,
1903 said of Mr. Beury:
=Col. Beury needs no eulogy - his
work speaks for him. No monument
need be erected to perpetuate his
memory, as long as the pulse of
commerce beats through the New
River Valley, so long will his i denti ty
survive, and as long as there is no
survivor of those who have known
and loved him, no writer's pen will
be needed to laud his great achieve-
ments. His career was one of stre-
nous action, love of his fellow beings,
liberal generosity and self-sacrifice;
and there (is) not a miner's home in
the great New River coal field which
does not feel the great loss that has
been sustained by the calling to the
Great Beyond of an advisor and
benefactor. Not a trainman who
travels through New River but feels
the loss. Indeed his friends and
admirers were a legion too numer-
ous to count. To know him was to
love him:
After a short service at his home,
his body was carried to Charleston,
W.Va., by special train for services
in St. John Episcopal Church. Tem-
porary interment was robe in Spring
Hill Cemetery, later to be reinterred
in a vault to be erected at the home
he loved so well at Beury. In later
years a monument was erected at
Quinnimont in his honor.

Tacrine: New Medicine
for AIzheimer's
Recently the Peripheral and
Central Nervous System Drugs
Advisory Committee of the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA)
unanimously recommended ap-
proval of tacrinc (Cognex by
Warner Lambert). The recom-
mendation was made for the
treatment of symptoms of mild to
moderate Alzheimer's disease, the
most common form of dementia.
Alzheimer's disease is a neu-
rological condition which affects
about four million Americans, or
one out of ten persons over the age
of 65. Some of the more complex
abilities associated with thinking
and remembering, such as language
and perception, are lost.
Researchers arc focusing their
efforts on neurotransmitter sub-
stances in the brain and enzyme
inhibitors that affect memory and
cognitive ability. One transmitter
material is called acetylcholine.
Some research has been directed
.at evglaafing the valueofadminis-
tering substances, sucha/cn,
dt increase levels of aclcho-
line in the brain. During, the last
few years researchers have dis-
covcrcd that other substances such
as tacrine inhibit an enzyme that
destroys acetylcholinc. The pres-
ence of acetylcholine is thought to
help Alzhcimer's patients, In one
recent study, over half of tbe pa-
tients who received 80 mg of
tacrine a day for 12 weeks showed
:mprovements in cognitive assess-
ment scale ratings.

Outside some cities and towns, a natural gas leak may .
not be detectable by scent. In these areas, you may hear _.
a blowing or hissing sound or see dirt blowing into the air; water
bubbling or being blown into the air at a puddle, pond, creek or river; brown patches
in vegetation on or near a gas line; or fire coming from the ground or burning above it.
If this happens:

• Call the gas company and the police and fire departments.
• Don't try to extinguish a gas fire or operate any pipeline valves.
Chances are you'll never experience a natural gas leak.
