In Memory of Mecot Camara
By Chris Chanlett
A flowering crabapple will be
placed in memory of Mecot Camara
at Bellepoint School at 10:30 on May
2.
Born on Dec. 28, 1960, Mecot was
the son of Dr. P.D. and Jean Cam-
are. He had a distinguished career
as a student and athlete in Hinton,
including serving as captain of the
high .school football team. With
'Wootie' Beasley he won a state
championship in canoeing.
On Oct. 23, 1983, Americans were
shocked to learn that 243 Marines
were killed in a single bomb blast in
Beirut, Lebanon. Hinton was even
more bereaved when they learned
that native son Mecot Camara was
among the victims.
He was posthumusly awarded a
Purp]e Heart for thisloss. His mother
Jean and wife Tammy received Gold
Star pins as survivors.
Jean Bollingerhas now initiated
this tree planting in memory of her
son athis elementary school 18 years
after he graduated Bellepoint. The
crabapple will be planted by Ground-
works in cooperation with selected
sixth graders at the school. Anyone
interested in sharing his memory is
invited to attend.
Hi nton's Pat Stennett picked up a
complete game four hitter in leading
the Bobcats to a 7-3 victory in open-
reground action from the Coppinger
