On the ballot on May 8, will be a
levy which will raise county taxes
approximately $1.78 per landowner
if passed, according to Summers
County Extension Agent Edsel Red-
den in a recent Cooperative Exten-
sion Service letter. Although $1.78
doesn't sound like much to pay per
year per person, the levy i• expected
to meet much opposition. The prob-
able cause for this opposition is that
the taxpayer doesn't really know
much about the levy.
This levy will not be included in
any other levy. Voter• will be voting
for or against the approximately
$1.78 per person per year levy to
fund 4-H program. Other possible
levies will be separate from this one.
The money received from the levy
would be about $25,000. This will be
used to pay an $8600 salary for a 4-
H Agent, with the rest of the salary
being funded by the West Virginia
University Extension Service. The
money would also pay approximately
$10,000 to $13,000 for a secretary's
salary and benefits, and about $3,400
for office supplies, telephone, and
travel reimbursement.
The exact tax increases proposed
are as follows: Class I property will
be raised 2/3's of one cent (less than
one penny) per $100; Class II prop-
erty will be increased by 1.3 cents ( a

III property will be increased by 2.6
cent• ( a little more than two pen-
vies) per $100; Class IV property
will be raised by 2.6 cents ( a little
more than two pennies) per $100.
The way the $1.78 average, as
stated in the letter from Mr. Redden,
was computed = by taking the value
of all property classes in Summers
County and multiplying them by the
proposed new assessment and sub-
tracting that figure from the old
assessment. This figure, $25,000,
was then divided by the total num-
ber of property owners, $14,000."
