Prov. 4:7
. .The whole system of man's redemption from the condom-
natin and cousequences of sin is based upon the wisdom of
G~! and man's powers to become wise. He is wise who
~nderotandsGed and the evidence of the wisdom of man is
the manifestation of his faith in God Sole.on said: "
Wisdom is the principal thing: therefore get wisdom: and
with nil Shy gettin~ get umlerstanding" ( Prey. 4: ?). Great
me, are not alwa~ ~, ~ there cannot be wisdom
without knowlege, still there may be much knowledge with
tittle wisdom. Knowledge is the sum of what is known or
information acquired by mankind. Wisdom is skill, good
sense, or the ability to discern, comprehend, and apply
accumulated learning, Simply to know, then, is not to be
wise. Wisdom eouatsts of two things: (1) Choosing the right
end, (2). Using the right means of attaining that end, in that
which pertains to the erigla and destiny of the human soul,
man is dependent wholly for knowledge ou the revelation
which God makes known through the medinm of His word.
Men will never become wise until they fear God; until, with
reverential affection and trusting confidence, they will look
to Him for guidance and blessing. " The fear of the Lord is
the beginning of wisdom ." (Prey. 1:7). For man to know in
this. he must be instructed of God; for a man to be wise. he
must be led of God. A man may be said to exercise wordly
wisdom when he adopts the very best means of acc-
omplishing his purpose, whether the end sought is good or
bad. Men are often wise in doing evU. Men can be as wise as
serpents, and equally as harmful; but the Saviour ad-
monishes His followers thus: " Be ye therefore wise as
serpents, and harmless as doves" ( Matt. 10:16). In spiritual
matters the wisdom of the world counts for naught." For it is
written, ! will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring
to nothing the understanding of the prudent" ( I Cer. 1:19).
There is great diversity in the mental capacity and instil.
ectual power of men. 8tree know a great deal more than
other, some are superlatively wise, in comparison with
others. They have much wisdom, as is manifested in the
successful prosecution of whatever they undertake. Their
success in the accomplishment of their designs shews them
to have good understandings. The ether class seem to labor
as sincerely, but are almost always doomed to failure. Many
a man has devoted years to the study of a profess-
ion. has become well informed, is called a well - read man;
but in the practice he meets with little or no success - he is a
failure. A good lawyer he may be, but a peer advocate ; well
read in medicine, buts paer doctor; a rme scholar• but a peer
teacher; knows the Bible, but is a poor Christian. Why is
this? There is at least one reason: they lack wisdom, and
with them there is a want of understanding.
