Golden Horseshoe Winners
Honored
TALCOTT FEBRUARY
STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
Talcott Elementary School principal, Gaye Shaver, proudly
announces the selection of the Students of the Month for February.
Second grader Leia Howell was chosen to represent grades K-2
and third grader, Gyasi Heus, was honored with the 3-5 grade
selection. Each teacher at Talcott nominates a student each month
to be recognized for academic achievements, good citizenship,
outstanding behavior or noted improvement in a specific area.
These nominations are presented to a committee of teachers along
with a report of each student's achievement. The committee then
selects one student from grades K-2 and one student from grades
3-5 each month. Students nominated for the month of February
were: Mrs. Fleslnan's kindergarten - Robert Kessler;, Mrs. Mock's
kindergarten -Austin Dillon; Mr. Tabor's first grade - Stacie Adkins;
Mrs. Pierces first grade - Justin Adkins; Mrs. Ford's second grade
- Leia Howell; Mrs. Tabor's second grade - Bryan Johnson; Mrs.
Bower's third grade - Gyasi Heus; Mrs. Boone's fourth grade -
Matthew Adkins; Mrs. Perkins fifth grade - Amanda Jarells; Mrs.
Oxley's class - Elizabeth "Nikki" Gill.
Aerobics!
State Superintendent .of Schools
Dr. Henry Marockie has announced
the selection of 221 eighth grade
students who were honored April 21
at the Cultural Center for their
outstanding performance on the
1999 Golden Horseshoe Test.
The examination is administered
annually to eighth graders from
each county and the Schools for the
Deaf and Blind to test their
knowledge of West Virginia history,
geography, civics and economics.
They are then inducted as "knights"
and "ladies" of the Golden Horseshoe
society.
'rhe Golden Horseshoe award is
an honor thatprovides life-long
memories and enormous pride to the
students, their parents and friends,
" Marockie said. "It is a highly
prestigious achievement that also
gives students a wonderful
appreciation and understanding for
the state and its people. "
Gov. Cecil H. Underwood was the
guest speaker at the Golden
Horseshoe opening ceremony at 9:30
a. m. in the Cultural Center Theatre.
Students lunched with the
constitutional officers that make up
the West Virginia Board of Public
Works, justices from the West
Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals
and members of the West Virginia
Board of Education.
Marockie and State Board
President Jim MacCallum lead the
induction ceremonies at l:15p.m.
The Golden Horseshoe test is
developed by the West Virginia
Department of Education. The top-
scoring students in each county
receive the Golden Horseshoe
award. The tests include multiple
choice and essay questions.
The Golden Horseshoe originated
in the early cojony of Virginia when
then-Governor Alexander
Spotswood saw the need for
exploration of the land west of the
Allegheny Mountains, most of which

participate in both aerobics sessions.
Be prepared to sweat! Everyone is
invited to improve their
cardiovascular system with us. We
participate in floor aerobics and
small weights.
Please wear comfortable sneakers
and bring along some drinking
water. Consult with your lhysician
before beginning an exercise
program. Individuals participating
in Wednesday aerobics are
requested to make a donation to the

who adopted a pledge that
translates, "Thus he swears to cross
the mountains." tie also presented
each with a small golden horseshoe
to commemorate the venture across
the mountains.
The Golden Horseshoe Award
today is presented to students in
recognition of their crossing the
mountains of learning and
knowledge on their way to becoming
good citizens.
Five teachers were also honored
for their contributions to the West
Virginia Studies Program. They
were: William Brown, Washington
Irving Middle School, Harrison
County; John Cross, Preston High
School, Preston County; Alfred
Foster, Romney Junior High School,
Hampshire County; Karen Hartney,
Hurricane Middle School, Putnam
County; and Merri Hess, Peterstown
Middle School, Monroe County.
Local Golden Horseshoe winners
were: Matthew Blevins, Candice
Lilly, and Nathan Merritt, all
students at Summers Middle School.

SPRING CARNIVAL
The Jumping Branch Elementary
annual spring earnival will be held
on Saturday, Ma 8th. Dinner,
consisting of ham, chicken, green
beans, salads, deviled eggs,
homemade rolls, and desserts, will
be from 4:00 to 6:00. The cost is $5.00
for adults and $3.00 for children
thru grade 5. Take out trays are
available.
The hot dog and game rooms will
be opened from 6:00 to 8:00.
Crowning of King, Queen, Prince,
and Princess will be at 8.00.
Following the crowning will be an
auction and door prize drawings.
Everyone is invited to come join the
fun.

SUMMER SKILLS CAMP
West Virginia Wesleyan College
Football Coach Bill Struble and his
NCAA Division II Bobcat coaching
staff will conduct a summer skills
camp for eight to 18 year olds, July
11 - 15, on the Buckhannon campus.
This is the seventh season for the
camp.
Each camper will spend the week
learning and improving
fundamental skills at his offensive
or defensive position. The camp also
includes sessions on strength, speed,
nutrition, flexibility, agility and the
mental aspects of football. Campers
will also have full use of the
recreational facilities at WVWC,
including the nautilus center and
the swimming pool.
Campers may elect to either stay
in the college's residence halls or
commute to the camp daily. Meals
will be served in the campus dining
center.
"Football camp is a great way to
enjoy the camaraderie of football
and improve as an individual player
and a team player," Struble said.
