Hinton BPW Number One
In W. VA. - AGAIN
At the April 16-18 convention of
the Business and Prefessional
Women's Clubs of West Virginia, the
Hinton local was named Club of the
ar for the third time since 1993.
The club was recognized for the
outstanding leadership of its
president, Nancy Smith, and the
club's networking opportunities
afforded to its members. BPW/WV
president Evelyn Howdershelt
singled out the recent Business Expo
;.ponsorod by the club for particular
praise. President Nancy Smith
introduced Hinton BPW member,
Ix)ue Ann Bennett, organizer of the
Expo, who spoke to the entire
convention body about the event.

Summers County Community Wellness Center
Promotes Non-Smoking As Well As Fitness

of my health and to do something

started going to the We]hess Center
with my best friend and her sister
to work out and get back in shape.
Just in a few weeks of working out I
have lost six pounds. With

"My name is Darlene Bridges. I
am 30 years old, and I have smoked
since I was 16. I am very proud to
say I have not smoked a cigarette in

Joanna Coffman
To Participate in Leadership
Seminar
The Hinton Woman's Club and
the Wednesday Club, in cooperation
with Summers County High School,
have selected Joanna Coffman to
participate in the 1998-1999 Hugh
O'Brian Youth Foundation West
Virginia Leadership
Seminar,(HOBY).
HOBY was founded by Hugh
O'Brian, famed as Wyatt Earp in the
50's and 60's, with\\;the goals of
seeking out, recognizing and
rewarding leadership potential in
high school sophomores.
Joanna Coffman is the daughter
of Tom and Dalene Coffman of
Jumping Branch and the
granddaughter of Rev. Elmo and
Maxine Alderman and Ina Coffman.
She has one brother, Joel.
Coffman is a member of Hi-Y and
the Bible Club at school. Her
community activities include
teaching piano, tutoring a third
grade student, serving as vice
president of the Jumping Branch
Youth Group and delivering
sunshine baskets to the elderly.
Coffman's hobbies are playing the
piano, flute and saxophone, singing,
reading and being on the computer
and Internet.
The local competition was open to
all high school sophomores. The
criteria for selection consisted of
evidence of emerging leadership
ability, cooperation with fellow
human beings and sensitivity to the
needs of others, ability to relate to
new pursuits and acquaintances,
and the desire to learn and share
knowledge and experiec ith
others. "
Coffman will attend the West
Virginia Leadership Seminar on
June 10-13 at the University of
Charleston along with other
outstanding sophomores from high
schools throughout the state.
