Agil 28, 1914: An explosion at
the .vccles No. 5 mine in Raleigh
Couiity killed 174 men. The mine
conriécted with Eccles No. 6,
operating in another coal seam, and
nineffmen in No. 6 died of injuries
and ‘Of afterdamp, the deadly gas
left after a mine explosion.
April 28, 1920: The Monongahela
Natibnal Forest was created by
presidential proclamation. It is
the gnly national forest that is
compjetely within the boundaries
of Wigst Virginia.
Apjil 28, 1924: An explosion
ripped through the Benwood coal
minesouth of Wheeling, killing 119
miners.
April 28, 1948: Watt Powell
Park opened in Charleston. About
8,000, people, including Governor
Okey,. L. Patteson, attended the
city’s, inaugural game in the Class
A Central League. Watt Powell
Park ,was replaced by the city’s new
Appalachian Power Park after the

William E. “Grumble” Jones waged
a battle at Fairmont that involved a
force of 500 regulars, home guards,
and volunteers.

Harris “Hurry-Up” Yost as born in
Marion County. He wasa tackle on
West Virginia University’s football
team in 1895 1896, While
earning a law degree. In 1901, ,
Yost’s first season as coach
at University of . Michigan, the
Wolverines compiled an 11-0
record, including the 49-0 defeat of
Stanford in the first Rose Bowl.

May 2, 1900: State founder
Waitman Willey died in
Morgantown. Willey is remembered
for the Willey Amendment, which
provided for the emancipation of
slaves as a precondition for the
creation of West Virginia.

May 2, 1925: Flying saucer
investigator Gray Barker was born
in Riffle, Braxton County.
Barker became interested
in unidentified flying objects in
the 1950s after investigating the
sightings of the Flatwoods Monster.
May 3, 1843: US. Postmaster
General William Lyne Wilson
was born in Smithfield, Jefferson
County. Wilson joined President
Cleveland’s cabinet as postmaster
general in 1895. In the following
year, he introduced Rural Free
Delivery in Jefferson County, an
experiment which was quickly
instituted nationwide.
May 3, 1917: Fire destroyed the
West Virginia Preparatory School
in Keyser. The school was rebuilt,
and it evolved into the institution
now known as Potomac State
College.
May 4, 1896: The Children’s
Home Society was formed by a
group of Charleston ministers at
the YMCA.
Their goal was to place orphaned
and neglected children with caring
families rather than crowd them
into county poorhouses.

network series, Barnwood Builders.
GHS board member Karen
Fankhauser invited Mark Bowe,
the star of the show and founder of
Antique Cabins and Barns, LLC, to
observe the dendrochronology study
being conducted at the Barracks
by Kristin de Graauw, PhD
Candidate of Geography at West
Virginia University, and Shawn
Cockrel, laboratory manager of
the Montane Forest Dynamics Lab

Kristen de Graauw is the director
of WVU’s Historic Timbers Project
whose mission is “to provide tree-
ring dating of historic log structures
throughout southeastern WV to
enhance the historical significance
of the structures and frontier
settlement of the region.”
De Graauw and Cockrel have
made several trips to our area to
take core samples from historic
structures including another of
the Greenbrier Historical Society’s
structures, the John North House,
and the privately owned Cook’s
Mill in Monroe County.

samples from the McCoy Fort at
Williamsburg, WV. The team was
very excited to take samples from
the Barracks. Because tree rings
provide cutting dates and therefore
probable construction dates, their
samples will represent the first
hard scientific data that will reveal
a more accurate idea of the age of
that building and the stages of its
construction.
