Annual Field Day
Aims To Help
Farmers Conserve
Resources
Local farmers will have a chance
to see demonstrations of modern
agricultural equipment and tech-
niques at the annual Southern Soil
Conservation District Farm Field
Day, May 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. at the Pine Lane Farm, owned
by Reba Plumley. The farm is lo-
cated approximately 2 miles off the
1-64 Bragg exit.
The event is part of the conserva-
tion district's ongoing effort to help
local farmers put conservation tech-
niques into practice.
Farmers want to conserve soil
any time they can-it's just better
management of your resources,
explained Walter Patton, a Raleigh
County supervisor with the SSCD.
"We've been doing this for several
years."
The district will offer several
demonstrations at the field day: no-
till seeding, lime spmading and blow.
ing, tree planting, tire and trough
implementation and farm pond
management.
Vendors from out of state aswell
as Raleigh and surrounding coun-
ties will display modern farm equip-
ment and related products, and
representatives from local, state and
federal agencies will be present to
address questions related to farm-
ing and other land uses. Food and
drinks will also be available.
=We strive for our field day to be
something useful for farmers, said
Oscar Vecellio, the conservation
district's project manager. =Hope-
fully they can learn enough about
these practices to implement them
on their farms. He added, =Our
district work crews have been work-
ing with farmers on conservation
land practicee since the weather
broke this spring."
The District rents to famers its
lime blower, straw blower, no-till
planter and hydroseader. Farmers
and other land users can also rent
crews to do dozer work, as well as
build water troughs and plant trees.
The service is designed tobe afford-
able to farmers.
Another major service is tree
planting. Early this spring, the crew
planted 3,000 trees in Fayette
County and is now working to plant
10,000 trees on the Grace Walker
farm in Summers County.
Those interestedin renting equip-
ment or utilizing the work crew
should visit the Southern SCD office
at 475 Ragland Rd. in Beckiey to fill
out a Request for Service Form.
These forms may also be obtained by
calling the district office at 253-0261.
