.... :. :_ • &apos; -iaton _News Thurs. Apr. 12, 1979 Regional Marl Field Day Held The regional math field was held on Saturday April 7th at Concord College. The event was conducted by the Math Depart- ment under the chairmanship of Dr. Hoff. This was the fourth year of the regional math com- petition which enables the stud- ents from the six counties of Summers, Mercer, Monroe, .. . ,,.. Senior High students from Summers, Mercer, Monroe, McDowelle, Wyoming, and Raleigh counties participating in the regional math field day. Also pictured is Concord faculty sponsor Dr... Hoff. Fourth and Fifth Grade students from Summers, Mercer, Monroe, McDowelle, Wyoming, and Raleigh counties participating in math relays at the regional field day held at Concord College. Eight and Ninth Grade participants at the, regional math field day hosted by Concord College. Miss Ella Atkins of HHS finished first in the seventh grade competition in the regional math field day. Next stop in the competition will be the state finals at WVU. Sixth and Seventh Grade students competing in the regional math field day at Concord College. Raleigh, McDewelle and Wy0m- ing to via for the right to advance to the finals of the State Math Field Day. The day began with re,st- ration at 9:00 A.M. at the college. From there the twenty- four students representing Sum- mers County settled in to some rather intense competition which finally concluded at 3: 30 P.M. An elegant awards banquet was hosted by Concord College for all participants, instructors and parents in the college stud- ent center. This banquet had originally been planned for about 225 persons but due to increased interest the attend- ance topped the 280 mark. In addition to the free food and service, the banquet was high- lighted by a welcoming add- tess by Dr. Freeman, President of Concord College. As a result of the awards ceremony there will be three Summers County students headed to the State Finals to be hosted by West Virginia Un- . iversity later this month. students are Ella Atlmm, Hinton High; Sylvia Mathews, Hinton High; David Ellison, Hinton High. All other students reee-: ived special awards for part- ielpation. The Summers County group was comprised of: Sanjay Agarwal, Ella Adkina, Eddie Biggers, Janima Bond, Sandy BOsUc, Tlmmy Bugg, Paul Cales, Gwen Counts, Jeff Cox, David Ellison, David Grimmett, Patrick Harvey, David Hersman, Sylvia Math- ews, Bill McLean, Jonathan McMurray, Pam Nutter, Shawn O'Farrell, Chris Pack, Lori Richmond, Marsha Richmond, Sara Richmond, Jan Rogers, Kim Tin-her. These Summers County Stud- ents were accompanied by Harry Keaton, Elementary Sup- ervisor; Barbara Miller, and ' Tom Talbott teachers from Hin- ton High School; and Ruell Gwinn, Bus Driver. There were also several parents in attend- ance. A crowd of 225 people was expected at the math field day awards banquet at Concord. Crowd actually topped the 280 mark. David Ellison of HHS wrapped-up a trip to W.V.U. and the state finals by winning a spot in the Senior high division at the regional math field day. Mrs. Erskine told of all the services available through Red Cross and she expressed her appreciation for the volunteerk who were present with a des- ire'to help where needed. Osborne attended the General Federation of Women 's Club Convention at the Green- brier on March 29th. The club moved to donate, . Card chairman also reported names and number of cards ,sent. A short business session was held with plans reviewed 'for a household shower schedu- led at the church Saturday night. The group's project for last month "Do Something for Someone without Telling it" brought many chuckles and thank yon's. The spiritual pro- ject for the month of April is "Coals of Fire" to be com- pleted by the April meeting. Lydia Plumley will work out plans for June Bible School and bring report back to be dis- cussed by the members. Betty Bales thanked the women of the church for their love- offering in the way of food, house clean- ing cards, and a matching set of gown and duster. Bulletin committees and visitation sch- edule were read and updated. Patricia Lane was in charge of the lesson taken from I John 1st chapter. Discussion was held by all on "The Word Made Flesh ". $5.00 toward the prize money for the Summers County Reading Week, which will he April 30th to May 5th. A letter was read from the Cooperative Extension Sorvice of W; Va. University stating that the Bluestone Lake Garden Club and the W. Va. Univer- sity Coop. Extension Service are jointly sponsoring a Land- .scape Short Course for Home- owners to he held at the Mere- orial Building in Hinton at 7:30 p.m. on the last four Monday evenings in April.
