The Law That Protects
Your Benefits

?,
(NAPS)--Over the past 40
years, many workers have taken
on what can seem like a second
job: the responsibility of planning
for their own retirement.
That's because during that
period, a growing number of com-
panies and their employees have
switched from traditional pen-
sions to 401(k)s and similar plans.
A lot has changed since the 1970s,
but 40 years iater, we're st~i! protecting
America's retirement savings,
Since 1974, the federal law
known as ERISA has helped to
protect private-sector penslon
and health benefit plans.
With the rise of these defined
contribution plans, America's
workers have had to assume the
responsibility and the risk of sav-
ing, investing and managing their
own money. Fortunately, the
Employee Retirement Income
Security Act, commonly known as
ERISA, was enacted to protect
those workers.
Signed into law by President
Gerald Ford in 1974, ERISA estab-
lished standards for private-sector
pension and health-benefit plans,
increasing protections for plan
participants and their families.
The U.S. Labor Department
enforces the protections provided
by ERISA. The U.S. Treasury
Department and the Pension Ben-.
efit Guaranty Corporation also
have roles to play.
By 2030, nearly one-fifth of the
population will be 65 or older.
ERISA will hit that milestone
nine years later, but this law isn't
anywhere close to retiring.
In fact, as America's retired pop-
ulation continues to grow, ERISA
will remain the foundation for pro-
tecting retirement benefits. Learn

County Forest Ranger Tom Halki
has some debris burning tips for all
landowners and home owners this
spring.
If burning must be done-be safe
not sorry! Follow these tips for safely
burning leaves, grass, weeds, brush,
stubble, slash, stumps, and other
vegetative debris:
1. Burn Debris After 5:00 p.m.
*It's the law! March 1- May 31;
And
*It must be completely out by 7:00
a.m.
*Evening is the Safest time to
burn.
Less Wind + Higher Humidity
(Moisture) + Cooler Temperatures =
Less Chance For Fire Escape.
2. Never burn on dry, windy days.
*Wind + dry conditions = escaped
fire
3. Select a safe place.
*Cleared area - 10 feet around
debris.
*Plowed field.
*Away from overhead
obstructions.
4. Have tools on hand.
*Shovel, rake.
*Water.
5. Stay with fire until it's out.
*It's the law.
If your fire escapes, you are liable
for the cost of fighting the fire and
any damage the fire may do to
others.
