When elected, I would serve as a representative of the Greenbrier District on the Summers County School Board. It is necessary that I discuss issues and problems as well as offer some of the reasons why I feel qualified to ask for your vote. The first step toward improvement in communication and working relationships between the school system and parents is to have bi-weekly school board meetings at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Additionally, I am not aware of anything that eliminates me as an advocate for all students I am a parent, a grandparent, and currently I have a niece in this school system. My perspectives regarding the needs of children, when it comes to learning, have not dimmed because I no longer have school age children living under my roof. I have always had a focused viewpoint on the necessities for optimum student achievement. The most basic foundation I stand upon is that I care about improving achievement for all students in our system. I believe we could better serve the needs of a much greater number of students with changes in curriculum and course off' ings. Such changes should be driven by the job market's demand for trained and skilled workers, student interest, as well as the capabilities of students. My teaching for 26 years in 5 school systems in WV and VAwas devoted to helping every child to excel to their highest possible level. Additionally, we must challenge our more gifted students to reach higher on the ladder of achievement. We have students with 2 parents in the house, one parent in the house, living with grandparents, or living with appointed guardians. Everybody wants and deserves the best for their children. I listened to and worked with all of these caregivers of students. I want to work on our Board of Education and engage with the new superintendent to improve student achievement for all of the students of our county. The math curriculum would be a great place to start! Numerous teachers, administrators; as well as parents and guardians in our system work hard each day, many evenings, and weekends because they are motivated .to see students achieve at higher levels. Many who send a child to school or who teach children are frustrated and all too often feel nobody cares about the issues and problems of our school system. Let me say that there are many people, both in and out of the school system, who care deeply. Leadership and cooperation is needed to move on from past failures, get over the hurt feelings of the past, identify problems, find workable solutions, and get people to roll up their sleeves to work the solutions in order to solve the problems. So, a first necessary step is to "think outside the box." I want to be a leader in that endeavor. Our school system must be even more inclusive of all stakeholders because we need a lot of help. With an ever tightening state budget our school system must watch every penny of the budget to assure that the people's money is spent wisely while making sure that the primary goal of improving student achievement comes first! As a former business owner with employees, I understand the complexities of making payroll, studying budgets, and being aware of looming potential financial needs. Money must be spent carefully! Business experience is valuable when it comes to analysis of a school budget that must direct every possible dollar for the enhancement of student achievement. You canvote early at the Summers County Courthouse from 4/27 to.5f7 or on May 19, 2016 at your local polling location. I am Stan Duncan and I ask for your vote in order that I might work with the board, parents, and guardians on behalf of all of our students. .. i~Pol Ad Paid by Stan Duncan * ~,. I* ?
