Here is a partial list of what has been achieved in Hinton during the past eight years because of
the help of many people: These achievements are the result of people working together to make
Hinton a better place. Thank you to all who work unselfishly for the community.
~" Saved City $25,000+ on City insurance. We work hard to get the most value from City money.
~- Acquired $1.1 million dollars to fix Tenth Avenue and Temple Street Slide.
The hospital emergency access road was developed after years of discussions about the need
for access to Summers County Hospital when a high water event floods Greenbrier Drive.
~" The Hinton Technology Center was a major undertaking for city government and something
we can all be proud of. We acquired an additional $2.9 million in grants to add to the $1.6 Million
that was available to build this facility that houses nearly one hundred employees. Two other
technology companies have located in Hinton, IMC and PracticeLink. Both brought jobs to the
community.
~" Have more businesses paying B & O taxes. Largest amount collected in back taxes was $93,000
from City National Bank (after Legal fees).
Public Works Department, Fire Department, Police Department have new equipment.
Sewer system has been mapped.
Acquired the point at Bellepoint from the state of West Virginia. The City purchased the point
several years ago along with what we call the City Island. The WV Department of Highways
still had legal claim to that area. We worked with the DOH to get the title transferred to the City
of Hinton.
The City is on more stable financial footing. Bills are paid. Money is in the state investment
fund for both the City ($210,000) and the Sanitary Board ($90,000). Council needs to vote the
money to bring us into compliance with auditing standards that apply to the largest corporations.
as well as small towns such as Hinton. It would take about $13,000 to bring us in compliance
with the format the auditor wants. We have brought this to Council at least four times. Let's just
get it done.
~" The town is cleaner, more inviting. For example,
raThe Bellepoint intersection has been cleaned up.
--The area beside and across from the Pizza Hut looks much better.
--Burned houses on Main Street Temple Street, and Summers Street have been removed.
raThe three houses near the top of the new Avis Bridge have been removed.
--Burned building in Avis that became more of an eyesore when the newAvis Bridge opened
has been removed.
--Removed mosquito hazard, other litter at Mountaineer Sanitation site.
--Burned house on State Street has been removed.
--Several junk vehicles towed.
~Bottom of Third Avenue cleaned, including Harvey Pack Building.
--Alley ways are cleaner.
~These are the areas the public expressed concern about.
Rehabilitation of the CSX Passenger Station. Pointed the brick, painted the outside, installed
new doors and windows on fifty percent of the building, installed a new drainage system and
platform, and remodeled the waiting rooms and restrooms that are currently being used by
AMTRAK. Have received over $500,000 in grants.
~- Purchased the Freight Depot from CSX for $500. Received a grant for $128,000 to replace the
leaking slate roof. Building will be used to house a Farmer's Market and Artisan Center.
Thank you for reading this.
I will continue to make my decisions based on what is best for Hinton and not for my personal
gain or for the personal gain of those around me. I will continue to stay focused on making
Hinton a better, more attractive place.
