In early 1998, Proctor and Gamble introduced fat-free chips and crackers made with the fat substitute olestra to the market. However, eating your favorite chips guilt-free is actually making some snackers thing twice before indulging. Olestra, or its trade name Olean, has created controversy because it can't be absorbed not metabolized by our bodies. Although it has been approved by the FDA, some people experience mild to severe gastrointestinal discomforts, such as cramping and loose stools. Olestra also reduces the absorption of important A,D,E and Kvitamins, as well as cartenoids (plant pigment) which lower the risk of heart disease, cancer and degenerative blindness. Proctor and Gamble has added vitamins A,D,E and K fortification to compensate for their depletion, but not cartenoids. Eat any foods made with fat substitutes with caution and pay attention to how your body responds. --Taken rom PATh'WAYS TO WELLNESS - March, 1999 Branch Gospel Tabernacle with Pastor Elmo Alderman officiating.
