WHAT WE BELIEVE
at Riverview Chapel
SOME POINTS TO PONDER:
CHRIST IS THE GATHERING CENTER.
Although a local church le a gatherlng of llke-mlnded bellevers,
no fellowshlp based on people wlll work. "Truly Our fellowship,"
said John, "Is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Chrlst" (I
John 1:3). Matthew 18-20 states: "For where two or three are
gathered together in My name, there am I in the mldst of them."
It Is ao easy to be dlstracted from Chrlet, to find ourselves
gatherlng to a preacher, s set of doctrines, a sacrament, or form
of church government. Thls le very dlffsrnt from belng gathered
to Chrlat. We went to recognlze Hls headship (Col. 1:16) In our
assembly practically. We belleve He deserves thle, for It Is His
church: "Chrlst also loved the church, ahd gave Hlmself for it"
(Eph. 5:25).
THE LORD'S SUPPER OCCUPIES A CENTRAL PLACE.
Aa the early Chrlstlens dld, we come together on the first day of
each week to "break bread" (Acts 2-42, 20-7). Belng a dlvlne
appolntment, It should never be relegated to s secondary place,
or treated ae • matter of occealonal obedlence. It Is to be a tlme
of calllng our Lord to mlnd and declaring Hie death for us. It Is
observed not as a sacrament edmlnlstered by a clergyman, but
oelebrated as descrlbed In I Corlnthlana 11. The prime purpose
of thls time la not to minister to salnts, as in other msetlnge of the
church, but to mlnlster to the heart of God through approprlate
readlng of ecrlpturea, worshlpful hymns, and prayers exprsaslng
to God the worthlneaa of our Savlour.
