O. BOX 1000 • HINTON, WV 25951 Letter To The l, dit0r Highway Dept. Doing Good Job Dear Sir: Since I moved here in January 1993, the State Highway Department of Summers County has impressed me with their efficiency in clearing the main roads of snow almost as it faUsl I admire the foresight and commitment of the members of the department to keep the roads open. Abig thanks to them for what they have done up to now and for their work in the winten to come. I would also like to thank Mr. Arnett Willey of Pine Hill and his friends for keeping our subdivision cleared of snow and for plowing our driveways as well• I might point out that he does this as a community service and refuses to take any renumeration for the hard cold work that it takes to keep us in the clear. These are the things which make Summers County a great place in which to live! Gratefully, Symon Satow, M.D. R. E King was obsessed with torturing and killing James Byrd, Jr. by dragging for racist reasons. The court mandates that John King should be killed. That accomplishes nothing w not even a deterrent as other racists will acclaim King a martyr. Ancient justice prescribed a tooth for a tooth and an eye for an eye. Logically this means dragging for a dragging, We are still civilized enough to consider this barbaric. A better punishment is total solitary, confinement with no outside communication for life, and only those he hates supplying his basic needs. Capital punishment is inappropriate. Fifteen Union Nation members of On the, contrary, one European nation practices legal euthanasia a la Kevorkian or Hemlock Society. People with terminal illnesses or severe pain who wish to die are clinically depressed. With modern antidepressants, pain management, and psychotherapy life for these people can have quality, purpose, and meaning until death occurs by natural processes instead of lethal injection. The most heinous killing is partial birth abortions of innocent children for the convenience of their parents. A normal baby 2 inches from being fully born does not endanger a mother's life. Unless we give up our obsession with killing people we follow in the disastrous wake ofthe Herods, Nero, Hitler, Stalin, China's cultural revolution, Bosnia, and now Kosovo. Cordially, Ronald S. I found an engine had come up to the other side of the break ahead of us, so aided by the conductor and hag-a-dozen more men, we took Agatha from the rude couch we had made for her in the mailcar, and carefully covering her with blankets and my railroad rug, we carried her in a blanket in the rain, a long, long distance, through and around the landslides, where water and mud was knee-deep and put her up in the cab of the engine. Had trunks, eta., also put there, on the tender. Just then arrived the doctor, whom I had sent for miles away, hours before. Such a dirty, ignorant- looking tobacco-eater I have never saw. None of his physics for us, we decided. Away we all went and arrived at 5 p. m. The only tolerable shanty for miles around. The old woman had promised a messenger sent ahead that she would receive us, but when we got there, she said she couldn't possibly. I was desperate. I am afraid I would have captured the rookery by assault, and kicked the whole family out, if peaceful measures failed. As a last resort, before force, l might buy the house, I thought. But the old woman surrendered to my appeals, and I carried Agatha from the locomotive in my arms, and had her put abed at once. Fick & Kitch, the New York bankers, and Gen. Wickham of Richmond, Gem Echols, Mr. Hatch and others were there on their way State Convention Held The 93rd. annual state convention of the General Federation of Womens Clubs of West Virginia held March 5-7 at The Greenbrier was attended by Mrs. Bobby Basham, president and Mrs. James Massie, member of the Hinton Womans Club. MOREl! to Cincinnati on a tour of inspection of the railroad. They all were very kind, and offered to do anything possible for us. Mr. Hatch supplied me with choice brandy, and with that and some homeopathic remedies we had, Agatha gradually recovered, after being sick abed for five days and nights in that Irish cabin. From Thursday evening (13) to Tuesday evening (18). She was in a room wherein slept five white women and one old Negro woman (Aunt Eliza) and four cats. Plenty of daylight through the chinks in the logs, where the mud had fallen out. Sent a Negro two or three miles and got some crackers, and on these and some "Cambric" tea, with a hem- hemi-semi-occasional old hen wrought into a broth, she sustained life five days. I slept on the cabin floor with feet to a big open fire of logs, and fed on fat bacon, villainous. coffee (no milk) - and dough. "Only that and nothing more." Ugh! Road blockaded by earth avalanches, and no trains either way, after Fick & Hatch left Friday - until Tuesday night. Telegraph lines had been down so long that the operator at Hinton was going home for a visit. Tuesday night a man arrived, who had walked 22 miles from the eastward with orders for a "material" train (to be assembled) there by us to work its way east if possible, and help exhausted laborers there to clear track. Loaded up with Negroes, etc., this "forlorn hope" train started at past midnight, and Agatha and I in it in a box car with our baggage. "Our" crew had been working day and night already until fairly exhausted, and they were laying around asleep in the car we were in and others. I had bought a revolver and with that in my hand in my breast - pocket, we dozed by fits and starts till dawn. Nicotine "Combo" May Be Better Than One System to Stop Smoking Health hazards associated with smoking have been widely reported in the media. Yet. an estimated 25% of Americans smoke regu- larly. Many smokers would like to stop. According to data reported in 1994 by the Centers for Disease Control, 7 out of 10 smokers said that they wanted to quit smoking and had made at least one stop- smoking attempt. Today individuals who wanL quit smoking can try techniques such as psychological counseling, acupuncture, going "'cold turkey," and using products that contain nicotine (gum, patch, and nasal spray). All available nicotine- containing products have been shown to help some smokers to stop smoking. Nicotine patches currently are popular in the US. Nicotine nasal spray is now avail- able on prescription in the US. None of these dosage lorms should be used if one is still smoking. According to a recent report in British Medical Journal• combin- ing a nicotine patch with nicotine nasal spray may be more effective than using either nicotine replace- merit type alone. Individuals who used these dosage tbrms in com- bination were twice as likely to be nonsmokers after fivo, yars as compared to,personswha used only the patch. i Thinkin of building a Log Home 1' - All Kiln Dried Logs - 5 Log Wall Choices -- 25-Year Warranty - Pre-Cut Mill Notched For Excellent Fit 304-645-5027 l Call or Write for Free Information Packet I I P.O.
