Letter to the Editor
My Dear Fellow Citizens,
Normally, I would address my
letter to the leadership of the West
Virginia government. However, it

Medical Association 2014 studio a

redirect law enforcement and other
judiciary forces away from useless
cannabis arrests to opioids and other
violent crime suppression activities.
And these facts don't touch on the
loss of income for cannabis convicts
due to felon records. Quite frankly,
Governor Justice should consider a
general release and pardons
including expungement for all non-
violent marijuana inmates, past and
present.
Please urge your elected officials,
assuming you can find them, to
decriminalize cannabis, stop ruining
the lives of benign users of
marijuana, and get the National
Guard off the streets and out of our
prisons. West Virginia deserves
better!

Governor Justice than seeing that
our children's teachers are
adequately compensated or that
consumers pay reasonable utility

the streets of Huntington are
occL~pied by the National Guard.
Abnost Heaven indeed
In case, you missed it, our prison
system is occupied b.y the National
Guard because we have too many
inmates and not enough correctional
officers. Why is this? One reason is
like our teachers and other public
employees, our prison dmployees
were woefully underpaid and forced
to work double shifts for years until
recently. Quite simply, our state has
the worse public policy on state
employee compensation in the
nation. You either work with no raise
for eleven years and increased
benefit costs or you strike or you get
a job in another state. But that isn't'
the only reason - marijuana policy
is the main one:
Although most citizens would
agree that opioids are the biggest
threat to the state, marijuana makes
up 55% of arrests placing it 15th
nationally. (FBI/UCR)
2001-2010 during the rise of
opiates in West Virginia marijuana
arrests went up 23.3% placing us
llth in state rate of increase. (FBI/
UCR)
The total cost of policing new
marijuana cases in WV is
approximately $17.4 million per
annum.
To make matters even more
desperate, SB 487 -eform of the
Medical Cannabis Act) and SB 593
(Cannabis Rescheduling for
Decriminalization) are being held
hostage in Senate committees for
political reasons. So we won't be able
to combat opioids with cannabis (as
