Simpson Tomkies, of Hunt-
ington, on a resent visit here,
presented a beautifully framed
document commemorating the
memory of Jordan's Chapel to
the Summers County Historical
Society.
Mr. Tomkies is a direct des-
cendant of Gordon L. Jordan,
founderof Jordan's Chapel on
the True Road near Pip•stem.
Nearly two enjoyable hours
were spent reminiscing with
Mr. Tomkies on the early
history of the church, Hinton
and his family.
Mr. Tomkies is the grandson
of Morgan Douglas Tomk/es,
one of the early pioneer settlers
'of Hinton. Records say he built
the fourth log house in Hinton.
His wife was Clara Frances
Jordan, daughter of Gordon
Jordan.
Several years before the Civil
War, Gordon Jordan, and his
brother Tom, settled in the
Pipestem region of what be-
came Summer~ County. A
small community had already
established ifself in the
monntianous territory and in
the year 1852 it was decided to
construct a church. Tom
Jordan gave the land which
was near the line dividing his
property from his brothers.
According to the document on
the church history: "In the
construction of the building, all
work pertaining to the frame
had to be hewn with the broad
axe. It was then mortised and

power."
The building is on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Morgan Tomkies came to
Hinton at the same time the C.
& O. Railroad laid its track
through the New River bottom.
He had learned that the rail-
road intended to establish a
town along the river and decid-
ed to make this spot his home.
He was born in Ashland,
Hanover County, V~rginia, Oct.
24, 1848. When 19 he began
working for the C: & O. in the
commissary department. [n
IS6S he came to White Sulphur
Springs and again took a job on
the railroad when the track was
extended from that point. He
ran the commissary during the
time when the old Big Bend
Tunnel was under construction.
He established his home
where the City of Hinton would
one day stand and entered the
merchantil business. A
business he continued to oper-
ate until his death Jan. 4, 1937.
His wife, Clara, was born on
Oct. 27, 1854 and died Oct. 15,
1923. The schools of Hinton
closed for half a day on the day
following her death in order to
honor her memory.
