Music In Our
Schools Month
"A World In Tune" is the theme
for Music In Our Schools Month 1991,
which focuses attention on public
school music education in America.
The national celebration, to be held
during Mar., is sponsored by Music
Educators National Conference
(MENC), a 60,000-member profes-
sional association.
This year's theme highlights the
global impact of music and its uni-
versality to the human experience.
This unifying force is felt through-
out our county and abroad. America's
rich musical heritage is a vital part
of our schools and communities, and
it contributes to our nation's place as
a world leader. Music education
during the earlyyears can help indi-
viduals develop a sense of commu-
nity with others that brings joy and
a deeper understanding of them-
selves and the world around them.
On Mar. 7, at 1:00 p.m., WSWP-
TV will air the WORLD'S LARG-
EST CONCERT - a simultaneous
=national sing-along", linking more
than eight million students and
teachers nationwide. Marilyn
McCoo, pop star, will host the con-
cert which is produced by MENC
and distributed by PBS. This ha-

Hinton High
School Speech
Team
Six students from H.H.S. partici-
pated in the 23rd. Annual John
Marshall Forensic Tournament at
Marshall University, on Feb. 15 and
16. The students spoke in 5 prelimi-
nary rounds, in competition with
students from our 30 schools in 4
states.
These students worked hard to
raise funds and prepare their events
for this excellent, challenging edu-
cational opportunity.
Joey Hartwell, a sophomore,
competed in the Extemporaneous
Speaking Event in which he was
given 1/2 hour to prepare a 7-rninute
Bpeech on current event topics from
major national news magazines. Joey
also went "on camera" for the TV
Broadcasting event in which he
presented a 2 minute newscast, fol-
lowed by a 60 second commercial.
Following the completion of his pre-
pared material, he was given 2
minutes of news copy to read "cold".
Jamie McGraw, a freshman,
competed in the Novice Public Ad-
dress event which was open only to
students who had not competed
before this school year. Jamie pre-
sented an original, memorized, in-
formative 8 minute speech on Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder as it
Affects WV Vietnam Veterans.
Tony Michael and Jason Gill,
sophomores, and freshmen Tonya
Michaels and Karen Adkins com-
peted in Impromptu Speaking. This
event challenges the students to
think well on their feet. Topics dealth
with ordinary things, words, famous
people, or quotations.
Students draw 3 topics, selected
one and had 5 minutes to prepare a
5 minute speech.
Sister Joan Marie Coleman, Latin
teacher, at H.H.S., coached the group
and accompanied them to Hunting-
ton.
