Karen Vuranch As Emma Edmonds
Women's History Month
The Hinton BPW Club Presents
"Emma Edmonds"
Emma Edmonds was a Nurse,
Soldier and Spy in the Union Army.
At the age of 17, she fled her home
in Canada to escape an arranged
marriage, dressed as a traveling
Bible salesman. Edmonds continued
her disguise when she enlisted as
Franklin Thompson in Company F
of the 2nd Michigan Infantry. Her
company was called up to fight in
the first major battle of the Civil
War, Bull Run. In her autobiography,
Emma graphically describes the
exultation the soldiers felt going into
battle and their ultimate despair.
Her unit participated in many
battles. But, soon, Emma served the
army in another capacity, by
becoming a spy for the Union Army,
going behind enemy lines no less
than seventeen times without
detection. Her success was due to
the fact that she was a master of
disguise, Her exploits were often
dangerous and always exciting.
Between spying missions, Emma
continued to serve as a soldier. She
served as an aide general in battle
and, for a time, was stationed in
Harper's Ferry, in what is now West
Virginia. However, in 1863, E,mna

contracted malaria. She knew that
if she went to the hospital her secret
would be exposed. She secretly left
the army, planning to return when
she was well. But, she learned that
Franklin Thomson had been accused
of desertion and would not be able
to return to the army. Dressed now
as a woman, she returned to
Harper's Ferry and served as a
nurse there and in Clarksburg. In
1864, before the war was over, she
published her autobiography
entitled Nurse and Spy in the Union
Army selling over 170,000 copies.
