Students at Hinton Area
Elementary did more in December
than decorate their tree and
countdown the days until this most
special holiday. Each grade level
selected a country to learn about its
particular customs and traditions
related to Christmas. Each grade
level presented their research at an
assembly for the entire student body
and staff.
Pre-kindergarten students
learned that the holiday season in
Africa begins about two weeks prior
to Christmas and continues until
New Year's Day. After Christmas
Eve church services, the children in
Africa dress up in masquerade
costumes and parade around their
town. They also sing Christmas
Carols after Midnight Mass and
perform a play called "The Ekon
Play". During this performance they
dance from home to home carrying
a "baby" that symbolizes the birth
of Jesus Christ. The home owner
accepts this doll and exchanges gifts
' with members of the group.
Kindergarten students explored
Egypt and discovered that
Christmas is celebrated on January
7 each year. Egyptian choirs sing
carols and ring bells. They believe
that candles and lanterns are
carried to remember Mary and
Joseph. The Christmas Tree
originates in Egypt, children are
given sweets and money, and Santa
is called Papa Noel.
Students in first grade presented
Christmas Traditions in the United
States of America. They learned
about traditional foods, decorations,
and customs of America's sub-
cultures. These children learned
that America is a melting pot of
many countries.
Second graders collaborated to
study Christmas in Italy. Students
researched Italian traditions and
beliefs and worked together to create
a script and video for their peers to
enjOy. Even though their traditions
are sinlilar to ours in America, they
found that their Christmas season
lasts from December 6 through
January 8 each year. Most Italians
attend Midnight Mass and take part
in a special meal called "The Feast
of the Seven Fishes." An old lady
named Befana delivers presents to
children on January 7. Their video
stmas
project was a great success among
the second grade team for they
enjoyed researching, recording, and
acting out these traditions of Italy.
The country of Mexico was
brought to life by the third graders
at Hinton Area Elementary. They
presented a power point which
stated that Christmas in Mexico is
celebrated December 12 through
January 6 of each year. Students
shared that the nativity is
celebrated along with the
decorations of lanterns, poinsettias,
and pinatas.
Fourth grade students studied
China during the month of
December to prepare for their
presentation to the student body.
They began by transforming the 4th
grade hail into "Chinatown". Posters
welcoming all to "Chinatown" were
hung, Chinese lanterns adorned the
ceilings, Chinese Dragons and
symbols were placed on the walls
along with colorful tissue paper
decorations. During their
presentation, traditional Chinese
music was played in the background
and introduced the dramatic
entrance of the Chinese Dragon
which symbolizes good luck. A team
of students manipulated the
metallic red dragon into the gym.
Students presented Chinese
symbols and their meanings,
common instruments which
included drum rattles, typical
animals of China, and Chinese fans,
all of which were created by the
students. "Merry Christmas” in
Chinese was expressed to all of the
students in the audience at the
conclusion of their presentation. The
fourth grade teachers worked in
conjunction with Concord
University's Geography Alliance,
sponsored by Dr. Manzo. Concord
provided a wealth of resources for
the fourth grade teachers to use in
the classrooms and provided a
celebration at the Summers County
Memorial Building.
Every student ‘and teacher at
Hinton Area Elementary is ‘to be
commended by their interest and
presentations held on the final day
prior to Christmas vacation. The
students were able to explore,
compare, and contrast their own
Christmas traditions with traditions
around the world.

St. Patrick Catholic Church
Second Fish Fry This Friday
HINTON, WV February 29,
2016—With one Lenten Fry down
and two to go, St. Patrick Catholic
Church will be hosting the second
of three Lenten Fish Fry dinners
Friday March 4 at the Church Hall
at the corner of Temple Street and
2nd Avenue in Historic Downtown
Hinton.
"With school having been
cancelled last Friday, and having a
cold, blustery day sandwiched
between nice weather, we really
didn't know what to exPect with our
first Fish Fry," said Joe Garcia,
chairman of The Friars Club, the
men's organization of St. Patrick
and co-sponsors of the annual
dinners together with the Women of
the Parish.
"Even 50," he continued, "we
served more than 200 dinners last
Friday, and we are elated, and most
appreciative."
The popular annual dinners
feature fried or baked tilapia,
potatoes au gratin, rice pilaf,
coleslaw, roll, drink and dessert, ali
for still only $11 per adult and $7
for children under 12. The proceeds
from the dinners help support St.
Patrick Catholic Church and its
Parish activities.
"For a parish of our size, this is
quite an annual undertaking," said
Garcia, "and each year it still
continues to grow both in popularity
and in participation. We believe our
success is due to a combination of
great food, great volunteers, and
great supporters from Hinton and
surrounding communities."
The two remaining St. Patrick
Fish Frys are being held from 4 p.m.
to 7 p.m., eat-in ortake-out, Friday
March 4th and 18th. For additional
information, call St. Patrick Rectory
at 304-466-3966.
