possible to have cancer with-
out being aware of it?"
ANSWERline: Yes. Until a
cancer has grown, or has in-
vaded tissues, symptoms
usually do not appear. Pain is
not usually associated 'with
cancer until a later and less
curable stage. However, many
cancers can be detected be-
fore symptoms appear. So
even if you feel "fine,"
regular medical check-ups are
a good idea.
A young mother asks: '"My
neighbor's son has bone can-

my child against cancer, and
what symptoms should i be

ANSwERline: Make certain
that he is examined regularly
by a physician, who will tell
you how often he should be
checked. Also, be aware of
these symptoms, which do
not necessarily mean cancer,
but which could be a warning
.of possible cancer: severe
fatigue, bleeding, and pain.
The forms of cancer that
most frequently strike chil-
dren are brain, kidney and
bone;more than half of the
cases are leukemia.
