DAY ACTIVITIES
Fourteen young people
participated in the Martin Luther
King Day Celebration held at the
Hinton Area Community Center on
January 20, 2003. Prizes were
awarded to Jennifer Rand, Chassity
Foster, Russell Gwinn and Darren
Chappell for their entries in the
essay and poster contest. Kenny
Pierce spoke to the group about
Martin Luther King and his vision,
and her own and her family's
journey through the civil rights
movement and the changes it
brought in Summers County,
particularly in the school system.
when it was first integrated.
Starting Points Coordinator,
JoAnn Miller, described the event a s
"A wonderful day of fellowship and
remembering".
Participants in the day's events

ceremony and should be done with
utmost respect for retiring of the
Stars and Stripes. i
The ceremony opened with the
body of the school reciting the Pledge
of Allegiance in unison followed by
a patriotic song by Christie Lane.
Members of Junior Girl Scout
Troop #2152 were the color guard to
present the flag. Girls from Junior
Girt Scout Troop #2252 and Senior
Troop #2599 cut each stripe of the
flag and the field of stars. As each
stripe was cut the Girl-in-Charge
called out the name of the thirteen
original colonies in order in which
the stars were admitted to the
union•
Brownie Troop #2439 reverently
held each strip after it was cut while
waiting to put the strip in the fire.
The field of blue and white stars was
to be burnt last.
Each Brownie then laid the
stripes on the fire while Taps was
played by Hinton Area Elementary's
music teacher Christie Lane.
After the ceremony for retiring a Kelly Eagle menber of
flag was completed, Junior Girl Brownie Troop #2439, lays a

Our young people showed the proper
respect to hon or our flag. Several
of the students had questions about
the ceremony an the flag after the
program;, Some:.were concerned
about the disposal &the flag, I was
proud to know they had a deep love
and respect for their country
because of their honor paid to the

Are Sprinkling and Pouring
Really Baptism?
As we continue our look at sprinkling and
pouring as a supposed form or mode of
baptism, let us consider some historical
facts. It was not until around the 3rd century
A.D. that sprinkling and pouring was first
administered as a mode of baptism for those
on death beds, and those too ill to get to the
water and be immersed. It was then some
time around the 13th century before this was
actually accepted as the common =mode"
of "baptism," among those of the Catholic
church. It is interesting that one can find
quotes from Methodists such as John
Wesley, Presbyterians, and even Catholics
who will confirm the fact that in the days of
the apostles, before man took it upon himself
to add to the word of God -- the only way
one could be considered as baptized
according to the scriptures was for him to
be immersed. This should immediately raise
a red flag for those concerned with doing
things the way God sard to do them.
The scriptures say that John baptized in
AEnon because there was =much water
there," John 3:23. The Ethiopian Eunuch
was on a long joumey and likely had drinking
water with him, yet he desired to be baptized
in a water hole, and went down into the water
and came up out of the water, Acts 8:36-39.
The Philippian Jailer was not baptized in the
prison, where he likely had drinking water,
but had to leave the prison in order to be
baptized, Acts 16:30ft. Baptism is called a
burial, and a raising up in Romans 6:3-8 and
Colossians 2:11-12, in representation of the
death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.
When one buries something, he does not
sprinkle or pour a little dirt over it and call it
buried; yet, the word bury is the word God
specifically used to describe one's baptism.
People would be outraged if they were to
find out that a loved one was not buried but
laid on top of the ground, and simply had a
handful of dirt sprinkled over him, and left to
rot there.
No, friends, sprinkling and pouring for
baptism are not found anywhere in the word
of God, and therefore God will not accept
these as a form or mode of obeying His
command to be baptized. If one can change
burial to sprinkling, then one can change
water to feathers; if not, why not? Next week
we will notice sprinkling and pouring in
conjunction with infant baptism.
