The state's most dazzling win-
ter fete is the Alpine Festival
held at Canaan Valley and
Blackwater Falls state parks in
Tucker County. Dates for 1979's
festival are March 1-4.
Begun as a small event by the
Washington, D.C., ski club sev-
eral years, ago, the festival was
incorporated in 1968 by the
Alpine Festival Association
which is composed of business-
es and interested people in
Tucker County. The Association
has carefully developed the
festival into the major affair it
is today. Each year several
thousands of West Virginians
and visitors from surrounding
states come to take part in the
ski races, gala festivities, and
arts and crafts•
"All our events are family
oriented," said Cathy Berry,
assistant secretary of the Al-
pine Festival. "We encourage
families to come to the fest-
ival, and many families come
back year after year."
Held in one of the most
beautiful parts of the state, the
Alpine Festival attracts people
from diverse backgrounds--not
just ardent skiers. There is
something for everyone--skier,
racer, and nonskier.
The activity-packed program:
begins with a ski film on Thurs-
day, March I, at 7:30 p.m. at
Blackwater Falls lodge.
One of the highlights of the
festival is the crowning of the
queen, a local teenager from
Tucker County high school. Con-
testants are being chosen now
by the student body and final
judging by an impartial panel
will he done during the fest-
ival.
As in most West Virginia
festivals, arts and crafts
abound. Craftsmen will he set
up in the main lobby of Can-

may browse, buy, or learn a-
skill at their leisure during the
hours of I0 a.m. to 6 p.m. on
Friday and Saturday and from
I0 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sun-
day.
A German Fest dance on
Friday night, and an Alpine
Disco on Saturday will give
visitors a chance to mingle.
But skiing is the thread that
runs true throughout the whole
festival and from which all
other activities radiate. At the

chicken soup). Fry only the big

animent.
Dapron further reports that
three fresh items come to the
supermarkets this month.., as-
paragus, rhubarb and straw-
berries. Because of recent har-
vests, price decreases should
accompany an abundance of
these crops in the stores.
Fresh vegetables are in short
supply due to deadly January
freezes and those vegetables
that have found their way to
market are high in price. But,
as always, Dapron is looking to
the positive side. He suggests,
as an alternative to fresh veg-
etables, a three-bean salad that
is satsifying, tasty, nutritious
and low in cost. For this sim-
ple substitute dish, combine a
one-pound can of cut green
beans, yellow wax beans and
kidney beans. Add one med-
ium onion sliced thin and thor-
oughly mix one-third cup each
of vegetable oil, vinegar and
sugar. Stir the dressing into the
beans, salt and pepper to taste
and serve slightly chilled.
"And since it's february, how
about splurging a little for Val-
entine's Day?" Elmer Dapron
asks. "With a little extra in your
food budget, you can choose a
more expensive cut of beef or
serve a special, extravagant
dessert. Or quite within' the
budget, how about a refreshing
compote of those plentiful ban-'
anas and strawberries?"

WVU GARDEN
CALENDARS- We now have
our supply of the 1979 WVU
garden calendars. Anyone
interested in obtaining a free
copy may stop by the Exten-
sion Office, call us at 466- 3711,
or direct mail to P.O. Drawer'
368, Hinton, WV 25951.
The information in this pub-
lication changes each year. In
addition to the planting guide
and vegetable varieties, it con-
tains a section on landscaping,
lawn care, house plant care,
planting and pruning trees and
shrubs, insect and disease con-
trol, home orchards, berries,
canning and freezing. I believe
you will find, this publication
helpful if you are interested in
gardening.
..ENERGY CREDIT-- You
may be eligible to claim credit
for energy-saving property in-
stalled in your home during the
period from April 19, 1977 to
January 1, 1979. Calendar- year
income tax fliers should obtain
a copy of IRS Form 5695 to
determine if eligible and to file

chicken soup). Fry only the big
end using the method preferred
for regular fried chicken. Cov-
er the fried chicken wings with
barbecue sauce and serve with
plenty of napkins. Sweet-sour
sauce is also a good accomp-
animent.
Dapron further reports that
three fresh items come to the
supermarkets this month.., as-
paragus, rhubarb and straw-
berries. Because of recent har-
vests, price decreases should
accompany an abundance of
these crops in the stores.
Fresh vegetables are in short
supply due to deadly January
freezes and those vegetables
that have found their way to
market are high in price. But,
as always, Dapron is looking to
the positive side. He suggests,
as an alternative to fresh veg-
etables, a three-bean salad that
is satsifying, tasty, nutritious
and low in cost. For this sim-
ple substitute dish, combine a
one-pound can of cut green
beans, yellow wax beans and
kidney beans. Add one med-
ium onion sliced thin and thor-
oughly mix one-third cup each
of vegetable oil, vinegar and
sugar. Stir the dressing into the
beans, salt and pepper to taste
and serve slightly chilled.
"And since it's february, how
about splurging a little for Val-
entine's Day?" Elmer Dapron
asks. "With a little extra in your
food budget, you can choose a
more expensive cut of beef or
serve a special, extravagant
dessert. Or quite within' the
budget, how about a refreshing
compote of those plentiful ban-'
anas and strawberries?"
, .... Fire Call-

tem Railroad Communications

partment officials a heat tape

insulation.

the fire and damage was report-
ed light.
