Dear Sir;
It's a known fact that the
leader of tht Council On Aging
is opposed to getting the
Y.M.C.A. Building for the Sen-
iors Citizens and Nutrition Pro-
gram.
Why? No one can figure that
out. Who's side is he on? Who
makes the little officer job he
holds possible?
The majority of the Senior
Citizens wants the building.
Should the minority be allowed
to decide such an important
issue?
Why do I bother to come to the
Senior Citizens Center which
has its fire hazards (One be-
ing the heavy, metal door
swinging inward), the over-
crowded evident conditions and
very limited parking space:?
(As if its anyone Discs bus-
iness.(
Simply because its the only
place to come until Senior Cit-

fortable. Wonder Why? It would

Citizens.

applications for the new rural
abandoned mine program (R-A-
M-P) on February 5th. SCS
State Conservationist Craig M.
Right said te signup period
would run through February 23.
"Nonfederal land that has
been damaged by past coal'
mining may be eligible," Right
said. "SCS can offer both tech-
nical planning assistance and
federal cost-sharing to particip-
ants.'
He explained that the new
program is voluntary and will
be keyed to the reclamation of
the most hazardous sites" first.
He said the SCS knows of
abandoned, coal-damaged land
in at least thirty-five of West
Virginia's fifty-five counties.

Cherry summed up the en-
vironmental impact by saying,
"If you mess up the land you
either pay or get sued". He
added that the state and fed-
eral government also keeps a
watchful eye toward protecting
the environment, and said the
days of the old oil field with a
well very 50 or I00 feet is long
gone.
Once deep gas is found Cherry
said the chances of hitting im-
prove with each additional
strike as data is gained. The
only deep well in this part of the
country is one in Russell
County, Virginia, drilled by
Gulf Oil at an estimated cost of
$3.1 million. The well is 17,000
feet deep and strictly speak-
ing, a dry hole in that it was not
commercially feasible. But it
yielded much geologic data and
showed there are deep-lying oil
and gas deposits.
In discussing the instant fort-
unes and misfortunes of the oil
and gas industry, especially the
highly speculative exploration
phase. Che/'ry Said his family
had been in the business since
1951. "My Daddy always said,
'The pigs get fat and the hogs
get slaughtered', or hng onto
what you get 'cause you might
not get anymore."
