& Teacher Meeting
On Fri. Jan. 26, the Summers
County Chapter 1 Reading and
Math Labs hosted a countywide
Parent & Teacher meeting to over
sixty guests at the Summers County
Career Center. Following registra-
tion, guests were invited to enjoy
delicious food that had been pre-
pared by the Summers County
Career Center Food Service Class
taught by Mr. Robert Mazzella.
Chapter 1 Director, Mr. Richard
Lawrence, then awarded the door
prize, a beautiful floral arrange-
ment prepared by Hinton Floral, to
Mrs. Margaret Persinger, Chapter
I teacher at Pipestem Elementary.
Mr. Lawrence then explained Chap-
ter 1 and its purpose and function
in Summers County Schools.
A brief program was then pre-
sented by Chapter 1 teachers and
students to exhibit some of the learn-

From there, it was all Princeton.
Ralph Watkins led Princeton (7-
10) with 30 points and 11 rebounds.
Jamie Cecil had 13 points and a
game-high seven assists. Jerome
Austin added 18 points while Shawn
Rhodes scored 16.
For Hinton, Lament Smith was
high-scarer with 23 points. Brian
Bowling had 12 and Pat Stsnnett

Virginia American Coed Pageant to
be held May 25 and 26, at the
Charleston Marriott in Charleston,
W.Va.
The Miss American Coed Pag-
eant is open to girls between the
ages of 13 and 19 who are good
students. Emphasis is placed on
the importance of physical fitness,
mental alertness, self-confidence,
achievement in school, and service
in the community and church. The
pageant seeks to recognize young
women for their contributions to
their community and their accom-
plishments at the present time while
encouraging them to set goals for
the future. The pageant theme is
=YOUTH - PRIDE OF THE PRES-
ENT- HOPE OF THE FUTURE
The winner of the pageant will
be crowned MISS WESTVIRGINIA
AMERICAN COED. She will re-
ceive her crown, banner, trophy,
flowers and an all expense paid
=dream vacation" to Hawaii to rep-
resent West Virginia at the Na-
tional Pageant. She will also re-
ceive a $500 cash scholarship.

American Coed is Shawn Hartman
from Keyser. The reigning Miss
West Virginia American Ceed Host-
essis Lori Tetrick from Hedgesville.
Awards are given in several ar-
eas of competition: TALENT,
SPEECH, SWIMWEAR, VOLUN-
TEER SERVICE, ACADEMIC
ACHIEVEMENT, PHOTOGENIC,
MODEL AND MISS COED PER-
SONALITY.
Miss Melinda Gwinn is sponsored

Stratton Junior High broke open
a close game in the second quarter
to runaway with a convincing 60-26
win over HintonJunior High School
Men. evening Feb. 5.
The Bulldogs led by just a 5-4
score after one quarter before whip-
ping the visitors.
Timmy Hannah led the way for
the Stratton, 13-2, wth 24 points
and 10 rebounds while Anthony
Scruggs scored 12 points. Tab Jer-
rell handed out seven assists.
Mike Harehaw scored eight
points for HJnton.

Forest Hill Chapter 1 lab that is
taught by Mr. JeffYoung. The read-
ing caterpillar that had been used
as a reading incentive in the
Pipestem Chapter 1 Reading and
Math lab was just one of the items
for view at the station set up by
Mrs. Margaret Persinger, Pipestem
Chapter 1 teacher. Also displayed
was student work and a booklet
prepared by her students on how
they feel about the Chapter 1 pro-
gram in their school.
Before leaving, parents were
asked to fill out a briefquestionalre
which allowed them to offer input
on how the Chapter I program can
continue to meet the needs of their
children in Summers County
Schools.
