Manchin Said
Secretary of State A. James
Manchin said the proposed sett-
lement of the 94 million dollar
C&P Telephone rate request for
"only" 42 million dollars is
daylight robbery and is nothing
more than a quick fix des-
igned to pull the wool over the
eyes of the general public and
the state Public Service
Commission•
Mauchin said he is forming a
100-member "Red Alert Comm-
ittoe" to act as a watch dog d5
utility rate increases such as
this one• Manchin said the PSC
Consumer adovcate, Billy Jack
Gregg, was acting like Agent
99, Maxwell Smart, and must
have been dazzled into delir-
ium when he called the pro-
posed settlement " a good
deal".
Manchin said it was a good
deal only for the telephone
company which expects the
people of West Virginia to hand
it 42 million dollars on a silver
platter.
Manchin said he could vis-
ualize a smoke filled room in
which Maxwell Smart
discovers a plan to ask for a 94
million dollar increase, scare
the people to death, and then
announce ( through a telephone
hidden in his shoe) a settle-
ment to cut it to 42 million
dollars and become the hero of
the hour. Manchin said Gregg
must have forgotten his role as
consumer advocate when he
called the proposed 18 per cent
increase " good news".
Manchin said the people of
West Virgintq are pressed to
the wall with utility rates and
can hardly carry the burden of
excessive telephone rates now
- let alone with an 18 per Cent
hike.
