Awarded Federal Funds
Summers County:has beefi
awarded federal funds under the
Emergency Food and Shelter
National Board Program. $4734 has
been awarded to supplement
emergency food and shelter
programs in the county.
The selection was made by a
national board this is chaired by the
Federal Emergency Management
Agency and consists of
representatives from the Salvation
Army, American Red Cross, Council
of Jewish Federations, Catholic
Charities, National Council of
Churches of Christ in the USA, and
United Way of America which will
provide the administrative staffand
function as fiscal agent. The
national board was charged to
distribute funds appropriated by
Congress to help expand the
capacity of food and shelter
programs in high-need areas around
the country.
A local board made up of
representatives of the County
Commission, American Red Cross,
the Ministerial Association, Catholic
Community Services, CASE of WV,
Council on Aging, First Presbyterian
Church, Loaves and Fishes, the
Senior Center, and local clients will
determine how the funds awarded
to Summers County are to be
distributed among the emergency
food and shelter programs run by
local service organizations in the
area. The local board is responsible
for recommending agencies to
receive these funds and any
additional funds available under
this phase of the program.
Under the terms of the grant from
the national board, local
governmental or private voluntary
organizations chosen to receive
funds must: 1) be non-profit; 2) have
an accounting system; 3) practice
nondiscrimination; 4) have
demonstrated the capability to
deliver emergency food and/or
shelter programs; 5) if they are a
private voluntary organization, they
must have a voluntary board.
Qualifying organizations are urged
to apply.
Summers County has distributed
Emergency Food and Shelter funds
previously with Iaves and Fishes,
First Presbyterian Church, and
Summers County Services Council
participating. These agencies were
responsible for providing 1479
meals, 60 nights of lodging, and 34
utility bill piyments in the previous
period.

program may be obtained by

with the PEIA deficit.
To date, legislators are still
reviewing what steps we should take
so we don't unfairly balance the
deficit on the backs of hard working
state employees. We are evaluating
the different proposals and
measures pertaining to this
complicated issue.
As always, if you have any
legislative questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to call me at
340-3269.
