Obituaries
MR. GEORGE W. BASHAM
Mr. George W. Basham, 89, of
Ellison, died Men. morning Jan. 28
at home following a long illness.
Born Nov. 28, 1901 at Ellison, he
was the son of the late Robert and
Sarah Hatcher Basham.
Mr. Basham was a retired car-
penter and member of the Ellison
Missionary Baptist Church. He spent
40 years of his adult life in Colum-
bus, Oh. and lived at Ellison since
1969.
He was preceded in death by his
frst wife Anna Williams Basham in
1946; a daughter Enola Oldfield in
1990; 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
Survivors include his wife Gaye
Lilly Basham athome; 6 sons, George
Basham, Jr. of Tippecone, Oh., Teddy
of Scio, Oh., Robert and James of
Day City, Fla., John of Washington,
Me., Charles, Marion, Ill.; two daugh-
ters, Clara Packer, North Ridgev-
ille, Oh., Virginia Brewer of
Lawetery, Fla.; two brothers, Mi-
cheel Basham of Interlochen, Fla.,
Luther Basham of Columbus, Ohio;
two sisters, Ruby ekes of Inter-
lochen, Fla., Edith Hill of Bmmden-
ton, Fla.; two step sons, Darrell Lilly
of Nimitz;, Harold Lilly of West
Carrolton, Oh. one step daughter,
Lorretta Cox of Dayton, Oh.; 37
grandchildren, 56 great grandchil-
dren, 6 step grandchildren, and 4
step great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incom -
plete at this time. The body is at the
Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in
Hintrl.
DR. EARL E. BERKLEY
Dr. Earl Esco Berkley, 88, died
Tues. Jan. 22, at his home, following
a long illness.
Born July 9, 1902, in Summers
County, he was the son of the late
Thomas J. and Rosa B. Lusher
Berkley.
Dr. Berkley received his B. S.
degree from W. Va. University. and
his masters degree and his Ph.D.
degree from Washington University
in St. Louis, Me. He was a cotton
scientist, having worked in the cot-
ton industry all over the world.
Dr. Berkley had retired from the
Deering Milliken Company in Spar-
enshurg. S.C. in 1967.
/l Dr,>Berkiey was a member of the
derson Presbyterian Church,
where he served as an elder for sev-
emml years and was a member of the
Alderson Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by his
first wife, Dorothy Megowen Berkley;
three brothers, Ernest A., Orus and
Carroll Berkley and a sister, Comm
Richmond.
Survi#ors include his wife, Bar-
bars Huffman Roberts Berkley; two
sons, Richard Earl Berkley of Dur-
ham, N.C. and Col. William Earl
Berkley of Scottedale, Ariz.; two
daughters, Anne Brenner of Urbana,
Ill. and Caroline Sullivan of Dan-
ville, Ky.; three stepchildren, David
Roberts ofCarey, N.C., John Roberts
f Bowling Green, Oh. and Kay
Mccoy of Oxen Hill, Md.; two broth-
ers, Thomas Roy Berkley of Sinks
Grove and Simeon R. Berkley of
Lewisburg; three sisters, Courtney
Wheeler of Beckley, Elizabeth Wil-
lis of Alderson and Murrell Jeffries
of Alderson; 12 grandchildren; one
great-grandchild and five stepgrand-
children.
Services were held Fri. Jan. 25 at
2 p.m., at the Alderson Presbyterian
Church of Alderson with the Rev.
Stewart McMurray officiating. Bur-
ial followed in the Gwinn Cemetery
in Alderson.
The body was at the Lobban
Funeral Home in Alderson and at
the church one hour prior to the
services.
LII2JAN C. CRAWFORD
Mrs. Lillian C. Crawford' 89, died
Wed. Jan. 23, at a Fairlea hospital,
following a long illness.
Born Jan. 13,1902, at Hinton, she
was the daughter of the late Ethon
and Tilda Bennett Martin.
Mrs. Crawford was a member of
the Freedom Baptist Church on
Powleys Creek, was a homemaker
and was a lifelong resident of Sum-
mers County.
She was the last surviving mem-
her of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Homer Crawford on Aug.
16, 1968; a son, Herbert Crawford
and a daughter, Louise Adkins.
Survivors include three sons,
Hubert and Howard Crawford, both
of Hinton and Bobby Crawford of
Baltimore, Md.; three daughters,
Viola Crawford and Lacy Humph-
ries, both of Hinton and Gladys Lilly
of Corinne; eight grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren, and seven
great-grsat-grandchildren.
Services were held Sun. Jan. 27
at 2 p.m. at the E.M. Meadows
Funeral Home, Hinton, with the Rev.
Phillip Lilly officiating. Burial fol-
lowed inthe Crawford Family Ceme-
tery on Big Cree.
Pallbearers were Charles COx,
Johnny Mansfield, Gerald and
Robert Burdette, Charles Hall,
James Cochran and Bernard For-
ren.
MRS. GENEVIEVE TRAIL
FARLEY
Mrs. Genevieve Trail Farley, age
78, died Fri. Jan. 18th., at her home
after a long illness.
Born May 26, 1912 at Pipestem,
she was the daughter of the late Dr.
William and Mrs. Pearl Martin Trail.
She was also preceeded in death by
three brothers.
She was a retired employee of the
Goescht Celanese Corporation in
Narrows, Vs. and was ahomemaker.
Survivors include her husband,
Mike Farley of Rich Creek, Vs.; two
sons, Ralph Farley of Alexandria,
Vs.; and William L. Farley of King
George, Vs.; three daughters, Mar-
gie Brown, of Kilmarnock, Vs.; Jua-
nits DiLisio of Leesburg, Va., and
Pattie Jaremo of Spotsylvania, Va.;
a brother, Van A. Trail of Elk Knob;
six grandchildren, and three great-
grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Men.
Jan. 21 at 11 A.M. at the Birchlawn
Abby Mausoleum Chapel at Pearls-
burg, Vs. with the Rev. Ray
McDougle officiating with entomb-
ment following.
There was no visitation.
The Broyles Funeral Home in
Petersburg was in charge of the
arrangements.
IRENE B. KINCAID
Mrs. Irene Bennett Kincaid, 77,
formerly of Summers County, died
Men. Jan. 21, at a Burlington, N.C.
care center, following a long illnems.
Born June 23,1913, atW.Va., she
was the daughter of the late Marion
and Mary Vance Bennett.
Mrs. Kincaid attended the Agape
Baptist Church at Mebane.
Survivors include a daughter,
Louella Russell of Fla.; a son, Cletis
Kincaid of Mebane; four grandchil-
dren, and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thurs. Jan. 24
at 11 a.m. at the Walker Funeral
Home Chapel, 304 West Center St.
in Mebane with the Rev. Floyd
Repass officiating. Burial followed
in the Pine Hill Cemetery i n Burling-
ton.
PAUL M. MURPHY
Paul Markus Murphy, 70, died
Men. Jan. 21, at a Rainelle medical
center, following an apparent heart'
attack.
Born July 26,1920, at Herold, he
was the son of the late Samuel and
Margaret Butcher Murphy.
Mr. Murphy was a retired coal
miner, was a World War II U.S.
Army veteran and was the recipient
of the Silver Star and the Purple
Heart and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Anna
Dotson Murphy; two daughters, Judy
Smailes of Rupert and Ella
Zickafoose of Hinton; four sons, Rich-
ard and Randell Murphy, both of
Richmond, Vs., Eugene Murphy of
Martinsville, Vs. and Jerry Murphy
of Rupert; four sisters, Minnie Godby
of Fairlea, Faye Tyree of Sum-
mersville, Helen HellemsofMt. Nebo
and Norma Dickson of Huntsville,
Ala., and eight grandchildren.
Services were held Thurs. Jan. 24
at 1 p.m. at the Smathers Funeral
Home Chapel in Rainelle with the
Rev. J.D. Surbaugh officiating.
Burial followed in the Wallace
Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.
RUSSELL E. SIMB
Russell E. Sims, 80, of 128 Brandy
Hills Dr., Port Orange, Fla, died
Tues. Jan. 22 of natural causes in
the Humana Hospital, in Daytona,
Fla.
Born June 8, 1910 at Judson,
W.Va. , he moved to Central Fla.
from W. Va. in 1959. He was a re-
tired custodian with Barnett Bank
Mortgage Co. and a member of Gos-
pel Light Baptist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Simsrecentlymoved
from Winter Park, Fla. to Port Or-
ange, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, Lena
Sims, of Port orange, Fla.; a son
Melvin Sims of Port orange, Fla.;
daughter Betty Byrd, orlando, Fla.;
four sisters, Mettle Zick.afoose, Hin-
ton, W.Va., Mary Wyant, Gaithers-
burg, Md., Myrtle Grimmett, An-
sted, W. Vs., Nellie Grimmett, Hin-
ton, W. Vs.; 8 grandchildren and 11
great grandchildren.
The bbdy was at the Baldwin-
Fairchild Funeral Home, Goldenrod,
Fla. Services were held Fri. Jan. 25
at 1:30 p.m. at the Baldwin-Fairchild
Funeral Home, 7520 Aloma Ave.,
Winter Park, Fla. Burial followed in
the Chapel Hill Cemetery in orlando,
Fla.
MARGARET M. ST
Miss Margaret Mas Stanley, 85,
died Men. Jan. 21, in a Hinton hos.
pital, following a long illness.
Born July 30, 1905, at Blue
Sulphur Springs, she was the daugh-
ter of the late Charles and Amanda
Tritt Stanley.
Miss Stanley was a lifelong resi-
dent of Greenbrier County, was of
the Methodist faith and was a home-
maker.
Survivors include a sister, Violet
Hawkins of Henderson, N.C.; a
nephew, Jerrall (Pete) Stanley of
Alderson, whom she resided with,
and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Fri. Jan. 25 at
2 p.m. at the Longanacre Funeral
Home in Fort Spring with the Rev.
Rick Curtis officiating. Burial fol-
lowed in the End ofthe Trail Ceme-
tery at Clintonville.

EcoTheater
Revs Up For
1991
of Athens, WV, the bride-elect is an
independent contractor in the Myrtle
Beach, SC, area. The bridegroom-
elect is manager of a franchise res-
taurant in Conway, SC. A civil wed-
cling ceremony will take place on
Sun., May 12, at Pipestem, WV.
EcoTheater is preparing for their
summer season by beginning re-
hearsals on "Ole Miz Dacey," and
scenes from The Hinton Plaf'.
Kathy Jackson, Artistic Director, is
seeking performers interested in
doing simple scenes, as well as those
interested in being in a one-act play.
EcoTheater prefers non-actors, or
those with no previous stage train-
ing. All ages welcome. Also, if you
are interestedin helping out in other
areas, such as prop management or
lighting, contact Kathy or Martha at
645-2443.
"Ole Miz Dacey is the feisty eld-
erly lady with an interest in a much
younger man. Martha Asbury -
Faulkner has been cast as Murble
Dacey, andis seeking her young man,
Orfin Furlow. Also needed: Albee
Good, the real estate salesman, and
Mr. Tapper, the insurance salesman,
who discovers his client is his old
school mate, and a possible love inter-
est. Ole Miz Dacef' is one of several
plays written by Maryat Lee for the
Appalachian area, and was a tre-
mendous success when first pre-
sented in the 1980s.
EcoTheater hopes to present both
plays and scenes this summer at
Pipestem State Park's Amphithea-
ter and other places. Alternating
with the Greenbrier/Summers
County group will be Judy Walker
and her Wyoming County troupe of
seasoned performers.
EcoTheater is a nonprofit corpo-
ration supported in part by the
National Endownment for the Arts,
and has theater companies in W.
