Weight Loss MysteryBaflles Scientist WASHINGTON -- Scientists ate baffled by a natural food ingredient that caused people to lose weight even though they were instructed not to alter normal eating patterns. Although other scientists and stud- ies may not agree, a study published in The British Journal of Nutrition found that the ingredient, a natural plant colloid, can cause significant weight loss. Several explanations for the weight loss are suggested, but the most likely according to scientists in a Finnish study, is that colloids seem to decrease the intestinal absorption of calories. However, universal ac- ceptance of this theory will depend on further study. National Dietary Research, an or- ganadeZation committed to the research velopment of nutritional solu- tions to world-wide health problems, has successfully isolated and incor- porated a series of colloids into a unique food tablet called Food Source One. A significant break- through in nutritional weight cow troi, Food Source One provides a scientifically designed method for weight loss. When used as directed, Food Souree One replaces high calo- rie fats with lower calorie nutrients, thereb providing optimum nutri- tion wth a minimum number of fat calories. According to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutri- tion, you do not need to restrict the amount of food you eat to lose vention should contact James Withrow at 466-1139. The fiberglass "igloos" are actually recycling bins that have been placed in four locations in Summers County as part of the Summers County Solid Waste Authority's recycling program. The Authority was recently awarded two grants totaling $30,000 to begin a county wide recycling program from the State Manage- ment Board and the Dept. of Natu- ral Resources. Teri Clark. Litter Control Chairman. has been ap- pointed Recycling Director to head up this project. "We have purchased five recycling bins to be placed at Krogers, Talcott and Sandstone Schools and Durable Products in Jumping Branch," says Clark. In addition, residentscan still drop off their recyclables at Moun- taineer Sanitation. The bins are designed so that large trash bags cannot be placed in the bin, instead the opening will acco- modate a small shopping bag. Items need not be separated into different bags for recycling. "You can place plastic, cans, glass, newspapers and magazines all in the same bin," says Clark, "The items will then be hand separated by volunteers participat- ing in the Inmate Work Release Program at the Summers County Jail." Inmates will then receive time off their sentence thereby reducing the County's housing expenses tbr prisoners. The key to a successf\\;fl recycling program is clean, properly prepared items and a well-infbrmed public, according to Clark. "Items that have not been rinsed out are not re- cyclables; they're garbage, and can result in the entire truckload being rejected for recycling. People must also understand." says Clark, "that these bins are not dumpsters for their household trash. People who may be tempted Lo use them for that purpose may find themselves help- mg the other inmates separate re- cyclables and cleaning open dumps." Items accepted for recycling are: glass bottles and jars, rinse and remove lids; all cans, rinse out; #1, #2 and #3 plastic, remove caps and lids and rinse; newspaper, maga- zines and catalogues, and corrugated cardboxes. It is not necessary to remove paper labels from re- cyclabtes. Flattening plastic and cans is helpf'ul, but don't crush glass itms. Residents are encouraged to con- tact Clark at 466-0695 fbr additional intbrmation. "I would also appreci- ate any comments or suggestions residents may have that would help improve the program," says Clark. "The project is totally dependent on c(mmunity participation and I want to make it as easy as possible for residents to begin recycling." ABOUT YOUR SOCIAL sECURITY LEAVING THE COUNTRY?
