CLARA P. ALVIS
Clara Parker Alvis, 100, of W.
Broadway Street, Athens, died
peacefully early Friday morning,
January 12, 2018 at her home.
Born June 27, 1917 at War Ridge,
she was the daughter of the late
Lennie B. Parker & Mattie Nelson
Parker.
Mrs. Alvis was educated in
Mercer County, earning a Bachelors
& Masters Degree in Education. She
was a retired teacher, having taught
school in Mercer County for nearly
40 years.
She was of the Methodist faith
and was devoted to her family. In
addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband
Glenn A. Alvis, along with 6 brothers
and sister, O. Roy Parker, J. Harry
Parker, Frank Parker, R. Lee
Parker, Fred Parker, Opie Parker &
Ruby Lytton. She was the last
surviving member of her immediate
family.
Those left to cherish her memory,
her two sons & spouses; Derk &
Linda Alvis, G. Len & Frankie Jo
Alvis, grandchildren, Jonathan &
Michelle Alvis, Alisha & Adam
Taylor, Kevin & Leslie Alvis, great
grandchildren, Evelyn Sue Alvis &
Lucas AveryAlvis. Numerous nieces
and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Mary Ann Cyrus, 77, of Brooks,
passed away on January 13, 2018,
at University of Virginia Hospital,
Charlottesville, VA.
Born in Hinton, August 26, 1940,
she was the daughter of the late
Hays and Mattie Williams Criddle.
She was member of the Central
Baptist Church, in Hinton, and
enjoyed going to the Senior Citizen
Center, and enjoyed collecting light
houses and being around her family
and friends.
In addition to her parents, she
was preceded in death by two infant
daughters, Tammy Sue, and Vickie
Lynn Cyrus, and also a sister, Betty
Meadows.
Survivors include her husband of
54 years, Jennings, one son Mark
Cyrus, Sr. and wife Donna, of
Martinsburg, WV, one daughter
Karen Sue Hostetter, and husband
Gary, of Alderson. One sister
Virginia Massie, of Hinton, and 5
grandchildren, Megan Cyrus,
Nathan Allen, Andrew Allen, Mark
Cyrus, Jr. and Allison Hostetter.
Several nieces and nephews
including her niece and special
caregiver, Sandra Angell, also
survive.
Funeral services were held 2:00
p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2018, at
Pivont Funeral Chapel, with Pastor
Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial
followed at the Fox Cemetery, at
Brooks. Friends called from 12:00
