A Community Appeal
By Marcia Green
On Jan. 21, we will be celebrating
the Birthday of a very well known
leader. A person who excelled in the
field of education, religion and
human fights. This hero's name is
Martin Luther King Jr., better
known as the Dr. Rev. Martin Lu-
ther King, Jr.
Dr. King continues to have many
faithful followers who pursue the
challenge of making that famous
dream a reality. In undertaking the
challenge, we understand the key to
the solution is that of Education.
Dr. Martin Luther King chal-
lenged us all not only to dream great
dreams, but also to educate our youth
whose futures'are bright withprom-
ise. We, his faithful followers believe
that Dr. King's courageous leader-
ship and dedication serves to inspire
us all to make real the promise of his
dream through education from gen-
eration to gdetrItih. " ........
What is one of the most difficult
challenges that faces our youth of
today.
What great menace attacks the
valuable youth of our community,
the aspiring leaders of the future?
Do we have the endurance to ad-
dress and conquer the monster, that
erosive danger that eats at our heart
and soul? The menace, that problem
o'drug and substance abuse.
A recent article in the Jan. issue
of the Johnson publication, the Ebony
Magazine, addressed several of the
burning issues facing today's youth.
The magazine interviewed sev-
eral of Dr. King's associates who
were involved with him from the
beginning of his struggles to en-
lighten Americans in the right direc-
tion through the political, social and
economic storms that buffet both to
the bitter end.
During my years as a professional
medical care prodder, I have had
many chances to experience sad situ-
ations resulting from the terror of
substance abuse. I have seen homes
torn apart, family units destroyed,
communities robbed of economic
stability due to the continous care of
drug offenders. I have seen the loss
of human development simply be-
cause somewhere along the way
someone forgot to say to a brother or
sister in need of love and under-
standing. A loved one reaching out
for help only to find an empty space,
to just say NO!
Words, I have found, come too
easily to many of us. We can say 'I
love you'and yet are in such a dazed
state and frame of mind that these
words are only echo's coming from
empty, unfeeling lips.
What would Dr. King say about
drugs? Coretta King, as quoted,
stated drug dealing is an easy source
of tax free income, and drug con-
sumption is a temporary escape for
those who see no hope of ever rising
above the poverty and despair of the
ghetto. She stated Dr. King believed
that a major investment in policies
that provide decentjobs and better
education and recreational opportu-
nities can help to keep young people
out of trouble.
Dorothy Cotton, former SCLC
education project leader, now a pro-
fessor of religion at Cornell Univer-
sity, believes Dr. King would chal-
lenge the users of drugs to find a
non-destructive way to fill the void
in their lives. He wOId try t ShOW
them ho w personal development
might lift them from the treat of
death through drugs.
Dr King; US Rep. John Lewis (D-
Ga.), stated, would lead a massive
non-violent, protest against the
people who are bringing drugs into
the community. He would urge that
we devote more resources to drug
prevention and education. He would
point out that any solution for reduc-
ing drug dependency and the drug
culture must address the underly-
ing condition of hopelessness and
despair.
According to Dr. Joseph Lore•y,
SCLC president, Dr. King would call
for our youth to resist the new lynch
mob(Killer Crack cocaine). He would
urge our people to embrace "libera-
tion lifestyles" that make us free at
last in this our one and only life. He
would join us as we call for arestora-
tion of values, a revival ofhope and
a renewal of activism. And he would
help us to reverse the tendency to
abandon the lady of spiritually for
the harlot of materialism.
Let us begin now to come together
to make the youth of our great com-
munity the best they can be.
When you are in the business of
solving problems, you need as many
points of view as you can get.
