Water Festival Vohune 96 No. 39 ,:, " Hinton, West Virginia Tuesday Jan. 12, 1999 Bluefield Bank Group Acquires Hinton's First National Bank Pocahontas Bankshares Corporation, a multi-bank holding company headquartered in Bluefield, W Va, announced last week that its wholly-owned subsidiary, First Century Bank, N. A. of Blue field has entered into an agreement to purchase the First National Bank of Hinton from City National Bank of Charleston. 'Ve are pleased to be entering Hinton with a full-service facility," said R. W. "Buz" Wilkinson, President & CEO of First Century Bank. "We are committed to providing quality customer service to the people of Summers County." The acquisition will increase Pocahontas Bankshares' total assets to nearly $360 Million. Pocahontas Bankshares and its banks (First Century Bank, N. A., a national bank headquartered in. Bluefield, W Va, and First Century Bank, a Virginia-state chartered bank headquartered in Wytheville, Virginia) will have ten banking offices in Mercer, Summers and Wyoming Counties in W Va and Tazewell and Wythe Counties in Va. First Century Bank, N. A. will purchase certain assets and assume certain liabilities of City National Bank's operation at the First "Pocahontas Bankshares is extremely pleased to have this new facility in Hinton," he said, "and we are excited about the acquisition and will welcome the opportunity to serve our new customers in the Hinton area." The acquisition, which is anticipated to close in the second quarter of 1999, will make no change in the First National Bank's present employment or board of directors, said Frank Wilkinson Vice President of Marketing and Branch Administration for First Century Bank. :::!.!::i::: : " " Hlstorle Green Sulphur Store Gutted by Fire Fire completely destroyed the Green Sulphur Springs General Store, Sunday evening. The blaze that gutted the building that has stood for over 150-years apparently started near the flue and spread quickly throughout the building and through the roof. The store was still open when the fire begain. Five fire departments were on the scene, along with a number of volunteer fire fighters, fighting the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control, but because of the age of the building it was impossible to contain the fire that did an estimated $100,000 damage. No injuries were reported. The Green Sulphur District Vol. Fire Dept. was assisted by the Meadow Bridge Fire Dept., the Rainelle Fire Dept., the Danese Fire Dept., and the Summers County Vol. Fire Dept. Hinton Has New Rite Aid Building The new Rite Aid Pharmacy on Stokes Drive opened for business yesterday. The new building looks larger but is actually just about the same size as the former location in the Country Roads Plaza. The new location has a drive-through pharmacy window, a bigger selection of food items, an expanded business center and a bigger cosmetics department with wider aisles and lower shelves. It also contains the latest generation one-hour photo machine, capable of making 5 by 7 inch and 8 by 10 inch enlargements while you wait. ..... A Look Baek at 1998 JULY John Henry Days celebration began July 10 at the Great Bend Tunnel in Talcott. Alex Enoch received the Campaign 2000 Scholarship through the Hinton Area Foundation. The scholarship is $1,000 a year for four years. The Summers County Convention & Visitors Bureau received a $10,500 for a two page ad in West Virginia It's You magazine. The City of Hinton donated a computer that was used by the police department to the Veterans Memorial Museum. The Family Resource Center announced "job hunting" services. On July 14 the Water Festival committee announced that former Hinton High School coach William L. "Bill" Garten will be the parade marshal of the Grand Parade set for Aug. 8. Forest Hill Volunteer Fire Dept. opened its doors. Jennifer Bragg and Valerie Hill each received a $1,000 scholarship from the CHPR Gwinn Scholarship fund. Center sponsored a town meeting at the Courthouse and began efforts to obtain a federal grant to relieve poverty and create jobs in the area. Film representatives with Disney Feature Animation Studios visited the area for a possible film location. Garrett Stover received $1,000 from the Dr. Matthew Ellison Memorial Scholarship. The Hinton Area Community Center received $2,000 from the state to help finance WV Day's 1999. The Chamber of Commerce joins with state agencies to promote Summers County as a retirement area. Steve Pack is elected Vice Chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee. Catherine Mack was reappointed Chairperson, Karen Sears, Secretary; and Curtis Shaver, Treasurer. New River is named an American Heritage River. AUGUST Water Festival begins Aug, 1 Barbara Bowling opens a new business near the Graham House at Lowell, the Old Station Peddler. The last day of the Water Festival was Aug. 9. The highlight of the festival this year were free Bateau rides on the New River. The Willowwood Country Club clubhouse burned. The Lilly Reunion, Aug. 14-16 is . The Hinton Area Community attended by thousands. Loaves & Fishes Near $5,500 Goal ARH Summers County Clinics Receive Accreditation TheARH Summers County Rural Health Clinic and the ARH Woodrum Clinic have received accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healtheare Organizations. The clinics were two of 26 Appalachian Regional Healthcare clinics surveyed in West Virginia and Kentucky. The survey evaluated the clinics against a set of national standards for ambulatory care organizations. The ARH clinics were surveyed in groups by state, which meant that each ARH clLic had to score well in order to achieve group accreditation. The West Virginia ARH clinics received a score of 97. Approximately 34 percent of ambulatory care organizations receive this score or higher. The group survey was good preparation for ARH's next step in assuring quality healthcare delivery. First to Qualify The unit includes one paramedic and four emergency medical technicians, she added. The dept. began developing the special unit when new legislation prohibited fire departments from offering medical treatment unless licensed. The department decided to organize a rapid-response unit and obtain a license. They developed policies and procedures, completed training and bought special equipment in order to qualify. The Green Sulphur District Vol. Fire Dept, is the first fire dept. in the state to be certified as a rapid- response medical unit, training officer Carolyn Kelley said. The 12-member department at Sandstone scored 93 out of 101 on the state's qualification list and passed final inspection last week to become certified. As a rapid- response unit the dept. is certified to provide advanced life-saving services, which includes using a cardiac defibrillator, she said. As an IDS, ARH providers - hospitals, clinics, home health agencies, home care stores and others - work together to provide a seamless lifetime of healthcare. These surveys  are aimed at improvingARH's continuum of care. "We view obtaining Joint Commission accreditation of our clinics as another step towards excellence," said Howard Wilson, Chief Ambulatory Services Officer. "Achieving agcreditation demonstrates ARH's commitment to providing high quality care to our patients ." Founded in 1951, the Joint Commission is dedicated to improving the quality of the nation's healthcare through voluntary accreditation. Pam and Roger Mullins reopen Willey's in Forest Hill. Hinton Sidetrack Park finished another successful season on Aug. 16. Summers Middle School principal Sara Brown received $25,000 from the Milken Family Foundation as one of 150 outstanding educators in the nation. K. D. Burdette received a $500 scholarship from the First National Bank. SEPTEMBER The Summers County Board of Education voted to place a three year $602,231 levy on the Nov. 3 ballot. A Empowerment Zone application seeking millions in federal money to relieve poverty and create jobs in the area is sent to the Governor for his signature. Kenny Howell is the recipient of the Claude Johnson Memorial Scholarship of $500. A federal highway grant of $160,000, for the restoration of the Hinton Railroad Depot, is awarded to the City of Hinton. The City must match the grant with $40,000 in order to receive the money. Facilitators with the New River Heritage program were in the area on Sept. 16. The Governor signs his approval of a federal Empewerment Zone application and returns it to Hinton on Sept. 18. The Graham House is featured on public TV as a showplace in West Virginia. Linda Ford is Talcott Elementary School's teacher of the year. Kimberly Martin received the National Bank of Summers scholarship of $600. Summers County High School get North Central Association of Colleges and Schools approval and accreditation. A replica of the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. Melvin is donated to the Veteran's Museum by John R. "Wolfe of Blusfield. Hinton officer Sgt. Timothy Adkins is appointed Chief of Police following the resignation of Chief Johnny Mann. Bret Crowder attends the Governor's Honors Academy, a three week learning experience at WV University.
