6 - Hinton News Tues. May 22, 2001 Local Students Earn Trip to Statewide Conference Four Summers County High School students attended the statewide Annual Career Development Conference at Jackson's Mill April 24-26. The students are enrolled in the Jobs for West Virginia Graduates (JWVG) program in Summers County. Their teacher, Chris Vaughan, accompanied them to the conference. JWVG is a private, non-profit organization that helps higk school students graduate and find fulfilling careers afterward. The students earned the opportunity to attend the conference through classroom competitions in thirteen of the job development competencies of the JWVG curriculum. The core curriculum provides skills in job and life survival. Most of the program graduates are assisted in acquiring employment and becoming viable citizens in their communities The students competed in the competency level activities of Employment Interview, Business Telephone Techniques, Personal Finandal Planning, Public Speaking and Critical Decision Making. " They also represented their local West Virginia Career Association chapter the JWVG students' organization -- in the Community Service Award competition. This award'recognizes members of local programs that have sponsored community service activities in the past year. A highlight of the three-day conference was the Governor's Award, scheduled for April 26, which recognizes an outstanding student from each school. In addition'to the curricular- based events, delegates have opportunities to interact with more than three hundred students from schools throughout West Virginia. A national trainer, Scott Friedman conducted training on how teenagers should take control of their lives. Chris Vaughan, one of the JWVG teachers and chaperones for the trip, pointed ot that he was amazed at t: 'exci1epfl,t., t,i: rilp:, ' h, ' t generated. It ls a rare trea to see these kids so upbeat about an event: These students earned their right to attend by their understanding of the training materials and their involvement in other class activities and the program's community support projects." Jobs for West Virginia Graduates programs are condacted in public high schools for students in grades Volunteer Enrich REACHH-FRC Programs Ying performs cello for an attentive audience at the REACHH- FRC After School Program at Hinton Area Elementary. When does a 17 year old New Jersey High School student, and native of Mainland China, find herself spending spring break in Hinton, West Virginia? "I found the Commission on Religion in Appalachia (CORA) on the internet, explained Ying Qian, "while I was searching for volunteer opportunities in Appalachia." She noted that it was the only organization she found that offered opportunities for individual volunteers under the age of 18. CORA Volunteer Program Coordinator Joyce Dukes put Ying in contact with Peggy Rossi, Executive Coordinator of REACHH- Family Resource Center (REACHH- FRC) in Hinton. After a flurry of e- mails, Ying flew into the Roanoke airport to begin her week-long adventure in Hinton. REACHH-FRC, which was launched about ten years ago as a domestic violence prevention program, has developed into a multi- purpose family-serving agency. 'e have such a diversity of activities going on, we can almost always come up with a volunteer project, no matter what someone's age, skills or interests may be. As long as they are motivated we can keep them "ing.hrought a wealth of'talents and capabilities to REACHH-FRC. Though her ultimate goal is to be a cardiologist, and she is currently enrolled in an EMT class, she is an accomplished cellist who also enjoys painting watercolors. During her week in Hinton, Ying treated REACHH-FRC After school program and Day Care Center children and staff to the rare Council. She travels to China, where she lived until the age of seven, every summer. Her next travels will take her to Paris for four weeks. Ying described her visit to West Virginia as being "definitely a different experience," adding that she had "worked with a different sort of people than I've ever worked with before." According to Ying, most of her friends spent spring break in Boston, and teased her, not only about where she was going but about the fact that she was not flying first class! ButYing has never been one to succumb to pressure to conform. This past week added an unforgettable experience to a life of rare adventure.
