March 27, 2012 i COMMISSION MEETING The Summers County Commission will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the County Commission Office at the Courthouse on the first and third Mondays of the month. In the event that a holiday falls on a Monday, the County Commission meeting will be moved to the following Tuesday. The next session of the County Commission will be held on Monday, April 2, and Monday, April 16 Contact Mary Beth Merritt, County Clerk at 466-7121 if you have questions or if you have items for the agenda. SPECIAL MEETINGS River Valley Baptist Church will be having special meetings (April 1 thru April 4), beginning Sunday Evening at 6 p.m. and Monday thru Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Evangelist Bobby Brown will be preaching each evening. The church is located 8 miles South of Hinton on Highway 12. If you have any questions, please call Pastor J. P. Mays at 304-384-7855. Nursery will be provided each service for your convenience. We invite you to come and be with us each evening. MEET YOUR CANDIDATE Meet your candidate day will be held at the Summers County Senior Center on April 24 and 26 starting at 9:00 a.m. SUNRISE SERVICE Sunrise service will be held at Freedom Baptist Church April 8 at 7:00 a.m. Breakfast will be served, followed with Sunday School at 9:00 and worship service at 10:00 a.m. Time change for Easter Sunday only. There will be no evening services. REUNION There will be a meeting to begin planning the Talcott High School Schoolwide Reunion which will be held June 9-10 at the Summers County 4-H Camp on Tuesday, April 3, at Mt. Pisagh United Methodist Church at 7:00 p.m. If you have any questions or ideas, please give Mike Tabor a call (304-466-4275). SIGN UPS Hinton Little League Sign - Ups will be held on March 31st. Sign-ups will be conducted at the Little League Park concession stancl from 12-4 p.m. Returning players for all divisions must register. Registration is for all divisions of baseball and softball ages 4-18. Fee $25.00 ($20.00 for each additional sibling). Anyone interested in coaching must register at these times also. MEET CANDIDATES There will be a "Meet The Candidates Night" at Pipestem Ruritan Club on Broadway Road, Pipestem. The date is Friday, April 13 starting at 6:00 p.m. All area citizens are invited to see, listen to, and talk with many of the candidates. Refreshments will b'e available. LAND JUDGING & HOME SITE EVALUATION CONTEST PLANNED The Greenbrier Vailey and Southern Conservation District's will host their annual Land Judging & Home Site Evaluation Contest on Wednesday, May 2, at the USDA- NRCS Plant Materials Center in Alderson. All area FFA, 4H groups and Envirothon teams are encouraged to participate. The contest will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. There will be four land judging fields or pits and two home site' fields during the twenty minute judging period. All groups are invited to bring at least two teams of four members each. Awards will be presented to the top scoring teams. For registration form, or additional information about the contest, please contact the GVCD at 654-6173 or the SCD at 253-0261. Forms must be received by April 5. BEAN DINNER Bean Dinner at Martha Chapel on Madam's Creek on April 7 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. On the menu is a variety of bean dishes, cole slaw, corn bread, desserts and drinks, $6 for adults and $3 for children. CANDIDATES FORUM The West Virginia Professional Women's Club, will host a Candidates Forum. It will be held at the Summers County Memorial Building, 97 Park Avenue on April 17, at 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. The Public is invited to come and talk to their'candidates. Bring your children and teach them the real meaning of Easter. Sunday April 1, Time 11:00 a.m. Easter Morning April 8, Sunrise Service 8:00 a.m. Followed by Country Breakfast. RAMP DINNER Hinton Elks Annual Ramp Dinner will be held at Willowwood Country Club on Saturday, April 14, from 12:00 Noon until 4:00 p.m. The menu will consist of ramps, fish, ham, brown beans, potatoes, cornbread, coleslaw, and homemade desserts. Adults/S12.00 and Children (under 10)/$6.00. GIRL SCOUTS 100TH BIRTHDAY TEA Former Girl Scouts - Dust offyour uniforms and photo albums. Bring them to our 100th Birthday Tea on March 31 at the Memorial Building from 2-4. Summers County Girls Scouts are asked to bring their mother or a significant female in their lives to the celebration. SUNRISE SERVICE Easter Sunrise Service will be held Sunday, April 8 at 7:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion Methodst Church on Zion Mountain. i Everyone invited to attend. Breakfast will be served after service. SPECIAL MEETING The Southern Conservation District will hold a special meeting on Thursday, April 19. The meeting will be held at the Southern Conservation District Building, 463 Ragland Road, Beckley. The meeting will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Agenda topic items will review the operation and maintenance on WVCA/SCD Flood Control Structures and Channels in the SCD area along with any other new busines related to the SCD operations. Following the O&M meeting the agreed upon procedures report will be presented for review. For more information call the SCD office at 253-0261. The state flower of both Con- necticut and Pennsylvania is the mountain laurel. It's actually a type of evergreen shrub. EASTER CANTATA The Talcott Charge Choir will perform "In His Presence" on Palm Sunday, April 1, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Talcott at 2:00 p.m. and again on Easter Sunday morning at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Ballengee at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Sam Haught and the congregations extend a warm welcome to all. Notice EARLY/ABSENTEE VOTING INFORMATION Early voting will be conducted in the County Clerk's Office at the Courthouse during regular business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday, April 25, until Saturday, May 5. Saturday, April 28 and Saturday, May 5, the hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The last day to vote an early ballot will be Saturday, May 5. Any registered voter can vote during this Early Voting time. If you have any questions call Mary Beth Merritt, County Clerk at 466-7104. Applications for mail in Absentee Voting will be accepted only until May 2, and must be in the office 5n this date. An application must be filed with the County Clerk and then the Absentee ballot will be sent to the applicant who meets the requirements.
