TEAR & MAIL TO: THE HINTON NEWS P. O. BOX 1000 HINTON, WV 25951 Letter to the Editor my Computer from a Ransom Attack. As I was browsing to get AOL Gold on my wife's computer I was diverted to a chat box. The advise was to set me up with a tech and asked for my phone number. Within seconds my phone rang. The next thing that happened was a request to get inside nay computer and fix it. After about 1 hour of showing me all the things that were wrong with my system a sales pitch was started and ended up showing me three ways to pay to fix the system. They could fix it for $299 or set up a two or three year follow up after , ;th~ fix er~ling :with :,$540 for ;three, years [ did:not paY a cen,t.tq ~. rty.on~ ,~ ,and, sh:ut my~, c0mpu:ter down manually. After my wife arrived home I found out she got a call about this mess at her work. That call originated without a reason to have her work number, and before I had 'a call. These criminals did research on us in advance of this encounter. "Imagine that". My system had over 10 years of data and family pictures which I lost restoring my system. They had locked up my files so I had to destroy everything and go back to my 2008 system as it was when I bought the system. Needless to say this group cost me over $18)000 in lost business data and family heirlooms. Luckily I followed the advice on my computer in 2007 to make a"System Restore" file. At that time I had to burn a three disc Restore file. Today one can be made on a USB thumb drive or saved in the cloud. That file saved my computer, otherwise it was a "Black Hole" I found a system booting disc I made from Norton anti-virus repair. I ran it and it filed through 683,258 files before it completed, 24 hours or so running tilae. After running the boot program I ran the System restore and it came up with an error before the third disc ran. At that time I realized the hackers had locked the system from a restore that would save my files. My files were gone and ran the erase everything and restore to the systems as was when I purchased it. -That worked, however the software that was on the computer was outdated and had to be updated. Advice to readers. Do not let anyone get into your system. "that was my first mistake" That unknown consequence cost me family pictures that were irreplaceable. Over 70% of my family pictures are lost for ever. At the time of making a computer system purchase make a "Restore System file", save it and put it where you can find it in case something stupid happens like it did with me. What I had to decide if it was worth $300 to loose my data. ! refuse to pay anyone who hacks into my system one cent. Needless to say I was heart broken but I refuse to be "Bullied" by criminals who are cowards in the background of the internet.
