Perkins The Greek word pascha is usually interpreted in English as Passover but in the King James Bible in Acts 12:4 it was interpreted Easter. Easter is said to be of Easter the goddess of the dawn or spring goddess. Many of the customs associated with Easter are derived from various spring fertility practices of the pagan religions which Christianity supplanted. Eggs were a primitive symbol of fertility; but Christians saw them as a symbol of the tomb from which Christ rose, and continued the practice of coloring, giving, and eating them on Easter. The Easter rabbit and the legendary producer of Easter eggs was also a symbol of fertility and new life; By Elizabeth M. Downie, Rosemary Hall, from the Encyclopedia International. Bishop (pope) St. Victor, from 189 to 199 AD, demanded uniformity on the date of the Jewish Passover and Easter or be excommunicated. It was set on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after March 21. Paul warned the Corinthians in 11 Car. 6:14 "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?" In the New Testament God has NOT given us any holy days to be kept but only the first day of the week. Where the early Christians remembered the death of Christ on each Lord's Day in communion; Acts 20:7, Easter was not known to them. Obey God; Mr. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16; Acts 2:41. (John 8.002) r Making Sense of Baptism (Part 3) !ii by Eric Lyons, M.Min. <http://www.apologeticspress.org/el.aspx> i http://www.apologeticspress.org/APContent,aspx?category=11 <http://www.apologeticspress.org/APContent.aspx?category=11&article=1230&top ic=139> &article=1230&topic=139 Used by permission. Paul wrote to the churches of Galatia, saying, "For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" (Galatians 3:27, emp. added). When this passage is coupled i withdeath.Romans 6:3ff., one learns that by being baptized into Christ, we are baptized into His: Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in t newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer: be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin (Romans 6:3-7). Rather than asking, "Why baptism?," perhaps we should ask, "Why nor" What other. act would so f t y represent the complete ending of a life of sin? In his comments on Romans. •-, 6, R.L Whiteside observed: In being buried in baptism there is a likeness of his death; so also there is a likeness of " his resurrection in our being raised from baptism to a new life. Hence, in being baptized we are united with him in the likeness of this death and resurrection. We are therefore, partakers with him in death, and also in being raised to a new life. Jesus was buried and arose to a new life; we are buried in baptism and arise to a new life. These verses show the act of i, baptism, and also its spiritual value (1988, p. 132). Continued next week.
